The wireless access point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network while the switch connects your wired-Ethernet devices together. The router function ties it all together by letting your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The push button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. The router serves as a DHCP server, includes an SPI firewall to protect against Internet intruders and also supports VPN pass-through. The WRT54GL even features TKIP and AES to protect your data and privacy with up to 128-bit encryption.     Works flawllessly., January 18, 2008

This router works perfectly for my network needs. I have my Wii and TIVO linked to it and also 2 Dell pc's. One being an XP system and the other a Windows ME system.

I was having a lot of issues with my home network, which was using a Netgear wireless router.

As soon as I got my new Linksys plugged in and configured, my issues were gone. I have a solid, reliable wireless network in my home now.

I love the fact this device is both wireless and wired. Nice.

I have this Linksys wireless router in my office room of my house, where the cable modem is. I plug my computer there, directly into the wireless router so I have no need for any wireless dependency in the office. My laptop connects quickly and reliably to the Linsys wireless network. I also use a Hawking wireless ethernet bridge (purchased locally) in my living room. I plug a switch into the ethernet bridge there, and I have a wired network there underneath my TV. Into that I have plugged in my PS3, my Xbox 360, and my Living Room computer, and they all share the internet connection very nicely and happily, all connect immediately without any configuration, and none have given me a bit of trouble.

I'm so happy I can focus on my actual stuff I want to do now, rather than trying to tweak and troubleshoot my network. Thanks, Linksys.

    Great Router, January 16, 2008

I have had 2 previous D-Link routers that were quite unreliable. Although I had to perform some of the typical tinkering to get the thing to work, it has performed flawlessly.

No problems at all, January 13, 2008
By user (Harker Heights, TX)
I use the wireless router for a desktop, laptop, and PS3. As far as the wireless router itself, I haven't had any problem what so ever. My components are practically located in the farthest corners of my home from the wireless router and there is no decrease in the internet speed at all. The setup was easy, virtually plug and play.

I checked with Dell and Linksys before I purchased my new wireless router. The router was easy to set up and was all that was expected. Works in the whole house, both up and downstairs. Only one problem, one older laptop has a software issue that took longer to get connected. However, 2 other laptops and three desktops were no problem. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Great, must have, computer hardware device. I had trouble setting the security but the Linksys tech marched me through each step. Speed and security was a must and with the Linksys WRT54GL, mission accomplished.

I love it !
I had the unit for about a year, no issues what so ever.
I live in an apartment, the range is very good (but my Apt. is small), and setting it up was very simple.

Had problems with disconnects until I called tech support, waited an hour, and got help to change the level of security to one compatible with my laptop. All seems fine now.

Some here have complained that there is no software or instructions for anything other than Windows. That is true. Even so I set it up via Mac in about 15 minutes. Then I spent another 5 minutes installing Tomato. You can install 3rd party software on the 54GL. It's been running for a week with no problems.

I have been using it for couple of months with DD-WRT firmware and love it. It has been rock solid without any issue.

If you are looking at this product, that means you are looking to run custom firmware to expose more functionalities. If that is the case, look no farther. This little box with DD-WRT can provide pretty much all the advanced functionalities you would need.

Great Little Router, December 28, 2007
By user (Houston, TX United States)
I was able to load a 3rd party Linux OS (Sveasoft) on the router and have it up and running in no time. It is MUCH better than the router I had previously (Netgear KWGR614); that router dropped packets ALL the time causing all sorts of strange network behaviors for which I inaccurately blamed my internet provider. Thank you Linksys-Cisco!

Great router with ability to load 3rd party firmware on it, December 25, 2007

This is a great router with plenty of memory to load 3rd party firmware on it. Great upgrade from my basic WRT54G (which I will now convert into a repeater).

    AWESOME Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G BB Router., December 23, 2007
By user (Novi, MI USA)
After a long search my son (12 yr old) recommended this and bought the same. Cisco's automated installation steps are easy to follow and is very fast. Connected Wii to the network without any issues. Strong wireless signal without any special antenna links Wii to Internet. Wii is located in the basement, while the desktop is on the first floor library. Basement steel beams/other lines etc. seems to not matter at all. Fast and works great. Only regret is I should have done this sooner.

Good product, no rebate!, December 9, 2007

This router is just what I wanted. The external antennas screw on and the router can be configured to be an access point or switch or repeater. The promised rebate was not granted. I don't know why I keep going for rebates.

great range but difficult installation, December 8, 2007
By user (ny)
The connection is great. I have the router upstairs and have no problem with the signal on the lower level. The installation did not go smoothly. I did end up having to work with a linksys rep. The first one was clueless but when I called back, I got one who really stuck with it until we finally got it. Be prepared to dedicate an hour and a half to trouble shoot. Wasn't pleasant. Hope my problem was isolated but beware.

    Greate Product, December 1, 2007

I searched for the WRT54GL specifically because it still runs linux and I wanted to flash the firmware. I flashed it with DD-WRT firmware and had no problems, it runs great. Great product, I have no complaints about it. I am very pleased with my purchase.

    Excellent router, December 1, 2007
By user (Orland Park, IL USA)
This is a great router. It worked out of the box, minimum setup and all functionality was there. For example, I use VPN software and it worked without any setup (other product like DLink do not!).
All the connection are stable (wireless and wired), no interference with the wireless phone in the house. Overall excellent product.

    Great Router!, December 1, 2007

I've returned my WRT54G v8.0 ( the ones currently selling at retailers )
and have replaced it with the WRT54GL.

This linux-based "GL" version has RAM/FLASH: 16M/4M compared to the 8M/2M of the regular "G" version, which allows a selection of third party firmwares to be installed on it.

I have installed dd-wrt v24 on this router ( was just a simple "firmware update" from the web interface ) and it has worked perfectly for a month now. Although the newest versions of dd-wrt allow a micro kernel to be installed on it, it suffers from the lack of RAM avail for it to work with.

Would recommend it to anyone who is up to installing third party firmware and enjoy a more sophisticated interface/router.

Mac users beware!, November 29, 2007

Things you should know before you purchase this router:

1. You're supposed to run the Setup Wizard prior to setting up the router, but if you're a Mac user, you'll be out of luck. The Easy Setup CD is NOT for Mac OS X. All the setup files are .exe. This means you will have to do all the configuring and setup yourself. *This device comes with no instruction manual.*

2. The online help from Linksys provides very little help for Mac users trying to configure things manually. I was left to look for assistance through online fora. I found *so many* people asking the same questions I had.

3. As far as making sure your wireless setup is secure, good luck with that. When you're on the router setup page (if you can even get to it), you'll be faced with several options. If you prefer to make an informed decision, you'll have to do some homework online to understand your options, because the little bit of additional information provided through links on the setup page does not really explain the differences between those options (e.g. WEP versus WPA encryption).

A few hours later (and I'm not a dunce), I managed to configure this thing myself. It performs well, my Internet connection is faster, and I have secure Wi-Fi setup. If you are a Mac user and the configuration / setup problem doesn't concern you, go ahead and buy this product. If you are intimidated by the poor support available to Mac users, find yourself a geek who can help you with the setup, or consider purchasing a different product.

I have submitted my complaints to Linksys about their poor support to Mac users. I hope my suggestion to come up with a setup guide for Mac users will be followed. With respect to support, I give Linksys zero stars. The WRT54GL itself, in terms of performance once it's set up, merits four. I subtracted a star from the product's overall rating for the grief I experienced doing the config myself.

Excellent experience with this product. Setup was extremely easy, and everything works as advertised.

I would highly recommend this router for anyone looking for an easy solution to a home network.
