The Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router combines the functionalities of three devices into a single device, a wireless access point, a four-port full-duplex 10/100 Mbps switch and a router. The wireless access point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network while the switch connects your wired-Ethernet devices together. The router function ties it all together by letting your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The push button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. The router serves as a DHCP server, includes an SPI firewall to protect against Internet intruders and also supports VPN pass-through. The WRT54GL even features TKIP and AES to protect your data and privacy with up to 128-bit encryption.     Excellent router, November 10, 2006
By user (Guatemala, Central America)
I have some of these routers and all of them works fine, I don't have problems with them.

I have used the wireless and ethernet functions. The best for me was I installed a third party firmware, because I was needing additional functions. The result: everything works fine!

The beloved WRT54GS now runs VxWorks firmware and no longer supports Linux firmware as of revision 5. The WRT54GL is essentially a WRT54GS revision 3 that Linksys released to appease the niche market of people who liked using the DD-WRT and OpenWRT unofficial Linux firmware.

If you are looking for a WRT54G(S) to reflash with the unofficial firmware, this WRT54GL is the model that you want.

    L is for lovely Linksys WRT54GL, November 10, 2006
By user (Eagan, Mn United States)
The WRT54GL follows in the lines of the early WRT54G routers (versions 1-4). They are compatible with 3rd party firmware, such as dd-wrt. The provided firmware also run very well. Most use the third party firmware for the additional features such as expanded wireless configuration options and expanded monitoring capabilities.

Stops working twice in a week, November 10, 2006
By user (Tustin, CA)
I saw so many reviews that the Linux version is very robust. But was not so impressed with its performance. At least twice a week it stops working. The wireless network would be missing. I have not done any advanced configuration. Need to power cycle the router to get network back. Verified by directly connecting my notebook to the modem and the line is up, so network issue is ruled out.
Maybe some one can suggest me any patch to be applied.

Great router for mixed PC and Mac networks, November 9, 2006
By user (Chicago, IL)
I purchased the WRT54GL router because my previous router (WRT54G) worked perfectly with my Windows PC's and Laptops, but would freeze the entire network when I connected my Mac laptop. This router works flawlessly. I just followed the installation instructions and plugged it in. I would higly recommend the WRT54GL.

    Great Router, November 8, 2006
By user (Alhambra, CA USA)
The Linksys firmware that came with the unit requires reset every other day. The WRT54GL works great after I downloaded and flashed the 3rd party firmware and configured it properly.

Very flexible solution with Linux loaded, November 7, 2006

We reloaded the firmware with Linux and are very happy using it as a flexible custom firewall and router.

Since I installed it I have not had any problem at all. I installed it on my first floor where the signal is strong, but on the basement is weak, only a 22% strength.

    hacked to DD-WRT, November 6, 2006

Works great. Handles 3 wireless connections + 2 lan pretty well.

Great with custom firmware., November 6, 2006
By user (San Antonio, Texas)
First off this to me is easier and more worth it than trying to find a WRT54G V1-4 on eBay. Believe me, I tried. Most go for about $50 average and are USED. This was $55, new and I knew it supported custom Linux firmware.

Few things to note. Use the DD-WRT firmware. It's the best. At first I had a few issues with QoS and port forwarding, but things actually seem to be perfect now. I use it to connect my laptop, psp and two PC's and it does great connecting them all properly to the internet. P2P works fine, and file sharing in my LAN is perfect. Options are abundant.

If you are not planning to use custom firmware, save your money and buy either another model or different router. Teamed with the custom firmware, this is the best router no doubt, especially for the price. Oh and if you want SpeedBooster technology, this router has it and the custom firmware can unlock it.

Just plug and go!, November 6, 2006

I have haven't had any problems with this router. It was simple to set up and has worked flawlessly since August. I have not used the wireless function yet though,so I can't comment on that.

    Super Router, November 5, 2006
By user (Chicago, IL. USA)
I have tried several different brand routers, like Netgear and D-Link, and had hiccups here and there, but this router has never had to reset on me. I, of course, changed the firmware to one that is open source, and by doing that I opened up a huge assortment of options you would only get if you purchased a more expensive router. Trust me, this is your one stop router. You will definitely not need another router until WiMAX is released, even then this will be the best one to have within your home.

    Great router!, November 5, 2006

I have no complaints about this router. I had a wired one before and had to transition to the wireless version of my linksys router, which was this one. Trasitioned very easily. Very use-friendly and easy to use. Didn't even have to read the manual!!!!

Originally I had a Belkin router and it would drop the internet connection several times a day. The only thing that would fix it would be a hard restart. Forget that! I got this guy and now I live a pain-free internet life.

I don't do much with the Linux part of it or any open sourcing, but I read that since it runs off Linux it's more likely to have a solid connection and it hasn't failed me yet. I've been running it for about 3 months now. It's a solid router and worth the extra cash.

Thank you Linksys for bringing the Linux code back, November 3, 2006
By user (Gainesvile, GA USA)
If you know a good deal about the linux based or can find someone who does, this unit is worth about 4-5 times what it costs. I have about 6 that I keep up for a few clients and with the linux based system they are very stable and very easy to modify for different applications, like buying high end network equipment for home network costs.

    great product, October 15, 2006
By user (albany,ny)
i bought two of these and installed tariff 28 firmware and was able to send signal about 1200 feet.these products are simple to use and easy to set up and change.i recommend these over the new wrt54g because these have more memory capacity and are similar to the older versions of wrt54g's.

Lives up to its reputation, October 13, 2006
By user (Somerville, MA)
I bought this in large part because it's the best-documented home router out there, thanks to all the Linux hackers who work on alternative firmware. I installed dd-wrt SP2 following the instructions on their website (load the mini version first and then the full version.) After I managed to wake up the mini version's Web interface (by pulling the power for 30 seconds and/or connecting first via the wireless interface) and installed the full version, the router has been working happily ever since. (I run utorrent set to use at most 1500 connections.) I'm tempted to buy a second one and double the RAM to 32M (which requires surface-mount soldering) since the only shortcoming of this box is that it has a mere 16M and after 20 days, has only 700K free.

Great, as long as you don't brick it!, October 3, 2006
By user (GA United States)
I loved my wrt54g (before they created the L version). I flashed it with the Alchemy firmware released by The Individual. All was perfect happy until my roommate flashed back to the Linksys provided firmware.

Now, I really liked this piece of hardware and wanted to use it as a bridge so back I go to re-flash this thing (for the third time).

As it turns out the third time was the charm and I bricked it trying to fix it back up.

Moral of the story? If you're going to experiment with this thing be prepared to buy a new one.

Everything else about it was great -- setup was easy, it was very stable with the factory firmware when used as a WAP and also very stable as a bridge when using the Alchemy firmware (though these didn't match in the other direction.

That being said since linksys has come out with this much more expensive version I'm not going to replace it with the same one and would suggest people go with one of the other very good (and cheaper) alternatives such as those offered by Buffalo (their wireless bridge, for example)!

router works well but set-up CD does not, September 28, 2006
By user
I agree with some of the other reviewers of this router that, when installing it, it is preferable to go to the company's web-page and download the exec file rather than rely on the installation CD included in the package. The CD could not find an internet connection but all went well when I downloaded the file from the web-page. Save yourself some time.
