The L model is LinkSys's best yet!, January 31, 2007
By user (Miami, Florida)
Forget the warranty! You probably won't need it with this model. With the capability to upgrade to Linux-based firmware, the L model is clearly LinkSys's best yet. Theo Karantsalis

Bitter disappointment and complete waste of time, January 30, 2007
By user (San Diego, California)
This was an excruciatingly difficult piece of equipment to set up.
The menus for setting the security settings were confusing and locked me out of the network. Even after pushing the reset button I couldn't get in. The package claims 7/24 tech support, but I couldn't find a phone number in any of the included paperwork, or on the package. I guess you need internet access to get the toll free number. The setup software was useless. I have had other wireless devices before that were much easier to set up, including Belkin and Westell devices. If you only have advanced computer skills, and if you don't have IT people at your disposal, I would recommend avoiding this device.

multiple uses of the WRT54GL, January 28, 2007
By user (Lewiston, Maine)
I have found it to be very easy to setup and working with the applications.
I really like the easy ability of the router for me being able to setup a computer to be open to the internet if you have a server to run for your own use and still leaving the rest of the local network as private.
This has been the easiest way I have ever seen to setting up different levels of a network than I ever had to deal with in linux alone.
The wireless network is even more interesting as you can lock out others from using your wireless network with the MAC address filter that allows for a secure network along with the firewall usage as well.
I'm sure that Linksys will have much more improvements to add in the future when building and improving their network equipment.
I would recommend the WRT54GL to anyone weither they are running linux, Windows or Macs. Its a great product that allows you to add in what you want to do to it or as they say, it lets you hack into it to set it up the way you want it to run.

Runs full version of DD-WRT, January 27, 2007
By user
This one is super stable because it is running Linux instead of crappy VXworks. The router also has twice the memory than the WRT54G so it can run the full version of DD-WRT!

DD-WRT allows you to turn the power up to 251mw. With dd-wrt you can use the router as a client bridge or a repeater. Plus the full version includes Chillispot. With Chillispot, you can host your own hotspot.

Great router for the money and running Linux makes it super stable and flexible!

Excellent after updating with third-party firmware, January 23, 2007
By user (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)
I was experiencing problems with it that included DHCP wireless sometimes didn't work, and frequent wireless disconnections when I managed to get an address. This problems disappeared after I upgraded the firmware.

I recommend this if you are willing to upgrade the firmware (which I was planning to do when I purchased this). This is a pretty easy process and gives you access to lot's of additional features.

Replacing older wireless router., January 22, 2007
By user (Seattle, WA)
Bought this router to replace an older one (Netgear WGR614). Main reason was the increased security (WPA) and wireless range. I was installing it with Comcast modem and IMac, the setup was good but not completely issue free. The documentation was not clear on how to configure it if you don't want to install the software comes with it and just jump right to the administration console. I like the MAC Address filtering and WPA security. The administration interface is not as nice at the Netgears but it works, one feature it doesn't have is a list of devices that are connected which I found helpful when adding new devices. Over all its a quality product that has only stopped working once in the 6 months that I have had it and a quick power cycle fixed the issue.

The Linksys WRT54GL Wireless G Broadband Router has some connectivity issues. Every week I need to reboot it at least once.

WRT54GL is just what the doctor ordered, January 16, 2007
By user
My WRT54GL arrived as expected.
Easy setup procedure. Did not have to read the manual.
Since I owned an older LinkSys router (BEFSR41) I eas familiar with the web-based configuration interface and did not have to read anything before setting it up.
For secure wireless operation, the 128 bit WEP encription and MAC address filtering feature were a breaze to set up. The unit offers compatibility with practically any existing wireless device.
I like the fact that the signal covers my entire house from basement to second floor.
This unit offers a reasonable degree of control and monitoring for home usage.

Great router for a great price, January 15, 2007
By user (Washington, DC)
The setup is easy, and the signal strength is very good, too. I strongly recommend this product.

    Great router!, January 12, 2007
By user (Houston, TX)

Bought the router several months ago. Works great on my home network of 2 PCs and 2 notebooks. I had to reset it one time due to lost connection, but other than that, it is working very well. I would recommend this router.

Best,

hackable, modable, good price!, January 12, 2007
By user (Seattle, WA United States)
I bought this router with the express purpose of installing DD-WRT, a open source 3rd party firmware. I was not disappointed. The upgrade went smoothly and I have had no issues with the router. The DD-WRT firmware allows you to boost your antenna signal, ssh to your router from the internet, mount network shares (on the router!) using samba... It really is a treat to use. Best money I've spent on hardware in a while.

LINUX based Wirewless Router is Tops, January 12, 2007
By user
The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, WRT54GL is stable and easy to setup. It offers advanced wireless security, and includes a four port switch to boot.

I've had some disappointing experiences with other wireless routers, but this one runs LINUX and is rock stable.

Great to use with DD-WRT firmware, January 11, 2007
By user (Pittsburgh, PA)

    Totally reliable, January 10, 2007
By user (Berkeley, CA)
Never drops my net connection. Always great thruput, even with teenagers running LimeWire and watching YouTube, while I'm e-filing massive documents across the planet. Really a first-rate router!

    great product, January 10, 2007
By user (Virginia, USA)
it reaches over 30 feet through cinder blocks, and the security is great
awesome when modded with linux...basically impossible to get another virus afterwards
definitely worth the money
p.s.
college kids, split the cost with 6 or so more buddies...10$/person for an amazing router...there's plenty of bandwidth to go around, too, for when there are crowds in your room

Old and Outdated Model, January 10, 2007

The WRT54GL is an outdated model of this product. You can find this for sale at retail stores for $20 less.

    Quite Impressive!!!!!!, January 10, 2007
By user (Mountain View, CA)
I live in Mountain View, CA. Home of Google. Google has decided to give the whole city of Mountain View free wireless access with a 5 year commitment! One of my best pals is a tech expert and recommended I buy this product-and it works great! He helped me set this thing up. The catch is that this particular model runs on Linux and I needed him to program it. This took several nights of work tuning and tweaking this thing so it would run for optimum performance for my specific needs. So the thing is you either need to know Linux or have someone set it up for you.
It's super though. I can play online games wirelessly and surf the net with ease.

Works well under tough conditions, January 9, 2007
By user (Winter Park, FL United States)
We are using this router to connect wirelessly to entrance gates at our club grounds. It gets a tremendous amount of use as we check in some 5000 campers, connect to our membership database and keep up with 6 remote laptops all out in the field. WORKS GREAT!

Simple or Complex, you decide., January 6, 2007
By user (Long Beach, CA)
Simple - Very easy for non-techies to get started setting up their own wireless network. Press one button and you're pretty much done. Encryption (safety) is simple to setup also. Although it may be confusing which one to choose when setting up your laptop - as some laptops do not have all the features (eg: WPA2 PSK) so you should pay attention to that when setting up.

Complex - Modifying this router to accept Linux, eg: DD-WRT. I suggest setting up DHCP with Static Leases based on Mac Addresses (Physical Address).
--Also you can physically modify this to accept USB

feature of flashing to DD-WRT:
-overclocking the 200mhz processor with the click of a button
-VPN (IPSec, PPTP, L2TP)
-UPnP, Port Forwarding, Port Triggers, DMZ, QoS
-Load Averages, Avaliable memory, IP Connections, and more.
