wireless functionality stopped working after one year, May 16, 2003

A good product but not built to last. Wireless capablities stopped working after 13 months. Conveniently after the warranty was up. Linksys advise was to but a new unit.

    Outstanding product!, May 15, 2003

This is a great product. The included installation guide was clear and straightforward (with great illustrations). It included all I needed to know to get the router up and running. I didn't even have to install any of the included software. I had a DSL connection on a laptop running Windows XP, and I wanted both to share the DSL connection via a RJ45 wire to another laptop (running Windows 98 2d ed.) in another room, and to be able to get online wirelessly on my primary laptop. This router allowed me to do precisely that. When my primary laptop is on its docking station, it's connected via LAN, and when it's not, it's connected via Wireless LAN (WLAN).

Also, some people have complained that it gets too hot, but mine hasn't yet. Maybe their units were defective.

Finally, Linksys' website (unlike Netgear's) is very well designed, and you can learn a lot about the product before you even order it, which allows you to prevent unpleasant surprises. I'd strongly recommend this product.

Simple to install, nice integrated package, May 12, 2003

Installed very easily under Windows XP Home. You don't even need the instructions. One complaint: the online manual did not match the screens for configuration. So novices beware, there may be some trial and error to get your advanced settings right. With that said, the standard settings worked out of the box for me, and I was up and running in about 10 minutes. I setup WEP encryption easily between a notebook PC using a Netgear USB adapter and the Linksys. Works great, strong signal, nice package.

This baby came with all the right moves: 1)easy to install, 2)easy to operate, 3)never lets me down. I might add, it also works flawlessly with the WET and my Playstation2. What else do you want, your router to be your girlfriend? Five stars.

Does the job! No Problems!, May 7, 2003

I dont know what to say, but that this Linksys product does the job. No problems! I would recommend this to anyone that is looking to setup a wireless network! Only thing is that, it doesnt have a good signal range for wireless notebooks. You move a few feet away from the router, and you loose @ least 20% of signal. Works perfectly with the Linksys Signal Booster, I bought that, and regained strong signal anywhere in my house!

The wireless functionality stopped working after about a year. Not built to last. I replaced it with NetGear equivalent, now I'm back in business.

So user friendly it can't work, May 7, 2003

I have a Linksys Cable/DSL router and was very happy with it, so it seemed like this product would make a great addition to my network. I uplinked it to the router, and after an hour on the phone with tech support, was able to make the two work together. When I tried to make it work with my Airport extreme card on my Powerbook, it would only find the network intermittantly, and when it did, it asked for a password. I called Linksys and was informed that they could not help me because I have a Mac. When I asked for a supervisor, CUSOMER CARE HUNG UP ON ME. I bought a Netgear access point, and it worked like a charm right out of the box. No configuration necessary. I am very disappointed in Linksys.

I received this router as a replacement for a faulty 2wire Home PNA router given to me by my ISP. It was not difficult to set up but I could see how a networking novice might find the instructions a bit obscure and confusing. I was very impressed that the signal from the unit is strong from the basement where it is set up to my laptop two floors up. I used a Linksys USB wireless adapter to hook up my kid's computer and it worked quite easily. So far, so good.

    WORKS LIKE A CHAMP, May 3, 2003

After ordering this and not opening up the package for several weeks, it took me all of 45 minutes to install this with a hard wire connect to a pc desktop and a Linksys wireless card in a Gateway Solo laptop that my wife has had for about 4 years. The software worked fine on my Win2000 desktop and the WinME laptop. The only disappointment is that in my 1930s two story house, there are several places, including one where I have a desk, that the connection is weak to non-existent. However, on the whole I have no real complaints. Both of us can now email and web browse from our own computers in separate rooms (or outside) at the same time using the same cable connection and that's what I wanted.

I'm a Mac user (iBook running OS X 10.2.5) connecting to the 'net over DSL. I found this router quite easy to configure. I've been using it for a couple of months now with nary a hitch. The best thing about it is that it costs about a third the price of one of Apple's Airport base stations. That's the great thing about standards (in this case, 802.11b), we Mac users get to take advantage of the greater level of competition on the PC hardware side!

    Works Well, April 28, 2003

For a relatively straightforward wireless network, this device works well and is a good value. Set-up was fairly simple and I had no trouble getting the device to sync up with my DSL modem. Range was about as expected although, depending on where you locate the access point, it's not going to be as far as indicated on the product packaging. I hooked up a Linksys signal booster with this access point, and now have good coverage throughout the house and even outside on my laptop. For my purposes, 802.11b works fine and the technology is at a price point where it makes little sense to wait if a wireless network is something you've been thinking about trying out.

I have had two of these exact routers now and both of them broke. Both had internal hardware failures and the year warranty just ran out so I'm out of luck. Customer support's only solution was to unplug and plug it back in.

Once I was able to get DSL, I wasted no time getting the wireless Linksys router. It was easy to install and I can't find anywhere in my home where I can't get a decent signal. If you're looking for a wireless router, this is definitely the way to go.

This product didnt work with my Toshiba Cable modem. I called up tech support and the support technician guided me through a router chaining set-up. The tech support is really impressive.

Functional with only occasional problems, April 26, 2003
By user (Indiana)
I have this router connected to a cable modem and wired to one computer, with a wireless connection to a second computer. It works great for routine Internet, file, and printer sharing and was easy to set up with a basic knowledge of networking.

Occasionally the router will have trouble, usually following either a change in the network configuration (adding or removing a computer) or a cable connection outage. However, a simple reset of the cable modem, router, and computer usually solves these issues.

When I bought this router, 802.11b was the only wireless networking standard around. Now, the advent of 802.11a and 802.11g has taken the spotlight off of 802.11b components. This doesn't mean they are useless. Unless you plan to routinely move large files or directories from computer to computer, or print out photos across the wireless link, 802.11b has all the speed you need. Plus, because it has been around the longest, the bugs have been worked out and it is more trustworthy.

When the router or wireless cards do experience problems, Linksys technical support is helpful and can usually resolve problems quickly.

It works for me!, April 25, 2003

I recently purchased the Linksys 4 port Cable/DSL Router for my home. The router and software installed easily on my desktop system straight from the "quick install guide." Software configurations were a breeze. After the installation, I fired up my Dell laptop with its wireless adapter and it auto found the Linksys router. Easy! In and around my house the connection strength is pretty good, most of the time running at maximum speed. Moving about 75 feet from the router, with 3 interior walls between the speed drops about 2/3. Overall I am quite happy with the product and would recommend it to others.

The title describes it as Cable/DSL, but it has nothing to do with that. It's just an ordinary router as any other. I can connect to a wide variety of other networks, but the only two you are getting is 10/100 ethernet and 802.11g wireless(Airport Extreme for Apple users).

I have looked at several routers and I would have to say that this one is the best. It is so easy to setup and within minutes of getting it out of the box, it was already hooked and running off of my ADSL connection. It also gives me the mobilty to move my laptop around the house without having to worry about having a cable running to the router. I highly recommend this product.
