Problems over Problems!!, February 4, 2006
By user
When I plugged the device for the first time... I allready knew I would have problem since the wireless led didn't light up normaly, according to the owner manuel it it suppose to stay light up when everything is ok, and start blinking whit network traffic, but no it had this steady blinking, indicating theres is a problem with it... I was able to connect to wireless network.. without problem, but I would get lost connection in the entire network every 2 min or so, when I had a Wireless PC connected. After reading many forum on the web.. I found that I was not the only one, and in fact alot of people seem to have the same problem.
One day after school trying to access the network with my wired pc, I was unabled to get a connection at all... I was not even able to connect to the router. I reseted the router unplug the power cord... I tryed everything... and that was it, I took the router and it went right to the garbage!! If you want my advise dont buy this router.. even if some people says it's find.. to many people seem to have issues with it... just pass this one.. and keep your money to get a descent one!! Maybe for an higher cost but at least you'll be satisfied!!

Do not buy., January 30, 2006
By user
This was an awful experience. The first day we got it, we just used the land-line, and not the wireless. Every few minutes it would disconnect and re-connect spontaneously. We called D-Link support, got about a dozen people who knew nothing about the product at all, and eventually decided to drop it. The "solutions" they gave us did nothing at all. Once we tried using the wireless, the problems persisted, but in a different way. Instead of every few minutes, the dropped connections only happened a few times a day. However, the "blackouts" of information, within 3 feet of the router, lasted for prolonged periods of time, from 10-20 minutes. Nobody could do anything to help us. We're hopefully going to return it soon for a Netgear.

Excellent Router, After You Fix It, January 30, 2006
By user (Manchester, CT United States)
A lot of the reviewers here complain of dropped connections, router resets etc. and I had the same troubles when I first got mine. However, the resets and drops were due to a buggy version of firmware, and simply going to the D-Link website and grabbing the latest firmware and installing it on the router took care of all of my problems.
While it is generally unacceptable for a router to ship with such buggy firmware, if you give it a little bit of time and effort (minimal really) you'll get a rock-solid wireless router for a good price.

D-Link Does It Again, January 24, 2006
By user (Fargo ND)
D-link is the place to be for speed in the wireless world I have the complete extremeG wireless system now for over a year and it's still going strong... the only thing I don't like is the only company I found to support the WPA-PSK security for printservers is netgear.

D-link is garbage wrt quality, January 17, 2006

Just plain crapped out after 6mos. Always needed resetting even a few months ago, now just wont work. Replaced with netgears most basic 802.11g and it solved all my issues.

Good but..., January 9, 2006
By user
Works perfectly. Yes perfectly. Flawlessly. That being said, the installation instructions provided with the unit are not the best. Thank God I have an eighteen year-old son. What I struggled with for an hour he fixed in thirty seconds. I'm sure customer service would have helped just as quickly, but being a guy I just couldn't call for help. You know how it is.

Lasted for 6 months ...., January 4, 2006
By user (Boston, MA USA)
I bought this router and D-link wireless notebook adapter about 6 months ago. They worked fairly well for 6 months and then suddenly the router died. With further investigation, I found out that the power adapter is dead. After numerous phone calls, D-link gave me an RMA and I shipped the router to get them to -fix- it. After the fix, it has a wireless range of 1 feet and after that low/no signal. My notebook picks up signals from my neighbors who are 2 stories below my apartment, but not from my router which is 2 feet away. I am undecided if I would send it back for a -fix- again ...

Not Recommended, December 28, 2005
By user
This router would probably work fine for a simple home network or internet sharing, but it almost worthless for gaming. I wish I would have done more research before I bought it, seems a large percentage of people have the same problem as I do with it. With the original firmware it will reboot itself at random times, most of the time killing any connections I had up, games and file transfers didn't stand a chance. With "updated" firmware it only got worse for me. Instead of random reboots, I got reboots on about a 20 or 30 second schedule continuously. Completely unacceptable for anything but basic internet sharing.

Acceptable, but not great router, December 27, 2005
By user (Seattle, WA USA)
This router works mostly OK, everything you can expect from a typical wireless router is here, no complains.
But I would recommend searching something better for this price: 1) It's processing is SLOW. The router introduces noticeable packet delays. The delays do not matter if you are downloading large file, but it matters a lot if you are playing online games like Counter Strike, and very painfully noticeable if you working remotely using Remote Desktop Connection. 2) Firewall filters work somewhat unreliably, randomly blocking access to some pages (seems to be fixed in firmware 2.76). 3) The logging and diagnostics are _very_ basic, logs are small and do not survive reboot - so if the router decides to reboot (never did it with firmware 2.75, started again with 2.76), there is no diagnostics about the cause of it.

Doesn't work with Nortel VPN, December 20, 2005
By user (SF, CA USA)
I have a wired D-Link router that works great with my company's Nortel VPN. So, I bought this wireless router for my laptop. After trying for days and days to get it to work I tried different configurations and contacted Tech Support. At first Tech Support offered suggestions to make it work, but didn't ask the right questions.
It was only after my company's tech support and I searched Google and D-Link's website did we find that this D-Link router doesn't support Nortel VPN with NAT. D-Link is a great product, but research first if it works with your configuration.

Good if it keeps itself up, December 20, 2005
By user (Seattle, WA)
Would never recommend buying this router. It has been very tough for me to have a continuous connection. The router keeps on rebooting itself.
After reading other people's nightwares with this router I have decided to throw it in dump. And wont even buy any other D-Link product. I am switching to Linksys. They have great products.

Disconnect many time, December 17, 2005
By user (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
I found that many reviewer above like this router. For if i have a chance to change it, i will. I don't know why it is disconnect many time after i turn on the router and use around 10 minute. First i suspect that the problem came from my internal wireless network in my tablet pc. But today, i know the true. I try to test many machine and they could not use an internet after they connect to this round around 10 minute. Beside my house there is a school and they have a wireless internet connection. I do not know which router product that they use but my computer could detect its signal every time that i open the computer from the morning until night. Whether i could not use the internet because not SSID key but i know the school has a good router while this router is just far from my laptop around 10 meter but always disconnect every 10 minutes. I suggest any people that purchase this product at the store should test it first before decide to purchase product.

Great router for the money, just need the right firmware!, December 15, 2005
By user (Michigan, USA)
I got this router in November 2005.
First impressions - well in terms of looks, it's not ugly, and it's not pretty. But all I'm looking for is functionality.
It seems that later versions of this router addressed complaints that some users have had - namely that you couldn't mount the router vertically (it now has optional clip on feet that let you do this) and lack of wall mounting options(it has wall mount hardware). I used neither of these but found the option to use them very nice.
I followed the instructions and it was up and running faster than my Microsoft MN-100 router it replaced. It came with the version 2.42 firmware, which seemed to make the router reboot every 20 minutes. I turned off the non-standard "super g mode (108 mbps supposedly)", which reduced the rebooting to once every few hours. Upgrading the firmware to version 2.5 and 2.70 didn't eliminate the daily reboots, so I tried to version 2.71 beta 10 firmware and it's been running for 5 days without interruption.
So far I like the router, but the web interface could be simplified a bit. It has a bewildering set of options and it's tricky to do port forwarding (it's under advanced, then virtual servers. Not exactly intuitive.) This is probably great for a techie, but the MN-100 was much simpler and better designed in this regard.
Overall a nice value for the money, but if you want less trouble be sure to disable the Super G option right off the bat, as it is not part of the official Wi-Fi standards and seems to cause instability - the speed increase isn't worth it. Also be sure to try different firmwares if you can't make your settings work.

DI-624 Erratic Performance!, December 9, 2005
By user (Chevy Chase, MD)
Despite all customer support help including using the router as a switcher, this unit has erratic performance. It has been sitting in a box and awaiting an RMA# from D-Link to be retuned.

Techsupport: You don't need WEP!, November 30, 2005
By user
Whenever I enabled WEP my D-link router would drop connections. All 3 wireless devices in my home (3 laptops) all indicate the router's signal died. I called D-link tech support and they told me I should use MAC Address Filtering and not WEP since it's more secure that way. What a complete B.S.!!! MAC Address cloning can get past this weak protection anyday. Is this their excuse for shipping a crappy router with broken WEP technology? I'll never buy from Dlink again.

No sweat. Solid performer., November 29, 2005
By user (WEST CHESTER, PA United States)
When I read these reviews I always wonder what computer the user has so here goes. I bought this to be used with a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop that uses the INTEL Pro Wireless 2200 NIC. I opened the box, followed the directions and at first the router did not connect. I assumed this was a setting issue on my laptop and thats what it was. A five minute call to tech support was all I needed. I have a total of 3 computers in my home network and I wanted to be able to add all printers to the network so I could print wirelessly to any of them. I made a few calls to tech support who walked me through it and in no time I was up and printing. As far as dropped connections, I have none in the 2 weeks of operation. Finally, I did need help to get the network secured and D-link was a big help. For the price paid, I think this is a great product. If I had to buy it again I would get a D-link model that incorporates a print server.

Dropped connection continually, November 15, 2005
By user (Hixson, TN USA)
Bought this and the matching pcmcia card for my laptop. Setup was very easy, and it worked just fine right out of the box.
But, in one weekend's worth of usage, I had horrible troubles with dropped connection. According to the Dlink strength indicator, I had the full 108mbps throughput, and I was only about 20ft away from the router. I returned it.
This is the second time that I have had this type of troubles with a Dlink router/pcmcia card combo. No more dlink wireless for me.
My configuration that has been working for quite a while now is a dlink 614+ wireless 802.11b router (which does work fine) and a cheap Gigafast 80211b card.

WPA encryption does not work, October 22, 2005
By user
D-Link's technician told me the DI-624c does not work with WPA encryption. He claims that future firmware will support WPA, but for now the WPA mode is "unstable". He had me set it up with WEP encryption.
I feel a little gypped, since D-Link advertises WPA on their website and I expected WPA when I purchased it. (I'm using firmware version 2.70 - dated 8/31/05.)

The "g" is a HUGE improvement over the "b", October 20, 2005
By user (Midwest, United States)
I had bought a D-Link wireless router, and later found that I chose the "b" type router. What a waste: 11mbs, bad reception, the works.
I then upgraded to this router and found:
- I no longer have any dead spots in the house
- NO interference with the cordless phone
- reception across the street!!
- true 108 megabytes per second connection, BUT ONLY after I upgraded the firmware at the D-Link site. Upgrading was FREE and EASY, took only a few minutes.
- Plug-n-play. I unplugged my old D-link router and just plugged in the new one. Turned it on, it aquired the internet instantly and it has WORKED FLAWLESSLY ever since.
- My wireless currently supports 3 wireless computers and 1 hooked up via ethernet. I've turned on the WEP and had all four computers on the internet at the same time and haven't noticed it slow down, restart/reboot, or give us any problems. Two of the four computers were running a graphic-intense online game while I was downloading files on the others.
- signal goes through walls as though they weren't even there! Even down into the basement!
On my previous D-Link, I did have to call customer service twice (for WEP setup questions) and both times were for nightmare reasons on my end. The tech was patient and VERY HELPFUL, which is more than I can say for most other products.
Anyway, signal is GREAT, customer service is GREAT, overall ease of use is GREAT, and you can't beat the price. I highly recommend this product for your wireless home network.
