Connection Problems - cannot use all features, June 2, 2006
By user
I have had this router for over a year. It worked well for the most part. But every once in a while I got problems with connection, for which I had to call customer support.

Now suddenly it has become a big pain ... Both wired and wireless connections drop every 10 mins because router reboots itself. I have made over a dozen calls to tech support, but the problem has remained.

The other thing is that D link tech support always tells you to go with basic 802.11b config with no encryption ( the most they would let me do was WEP, and always turned down WPA ). So even though this router has a lot of cool features ( super G, WPA, gaming mode etc. etc. ) , you are not allowed to use any of them. That is because if you try and it does not work, tech support will always tell you to turn all of them off. Thus all I have is a powerful router being used as basic 802.11b.

I'm successfully using three DI-624s, 3 DWL-G650s, the five port gigabit switch. All are working extremely well. Two of the DI-624s have been working constantly for months with no resets. I tried one Netgear 624 router and could not get it to work after 2 days. The D-link took 5 minutes.

    Stay away!!!, May 18, 2006
By user (Pacific Northwest)
I had a D-Link DI-614 which as far as I can tell bit the dust. I am on Qwest DSL MSN Premium. So I went and got the DI-624. First thing was put the CD in, well it kept telling me that my modem was a router (it is but I am hesitant about Actiontec wireless products until I get more info on them). After numerous phone calls I found out I had to change my Modems IP, yet no one could really tell me how to do this, not D-Link, not Qwest, and Actiontec wanted $25 for a tech call. I finally figured it out and got it all running. Since then all I have had is dropped signals, I have to reboot, or reset everything every 2 days. I know it is not my modem, since connecting that directly to my computer, I have had no problems for 3 days, as soon as I put the D-link in the loop, BAM, wifes computer can't get online, son's computer can't get online, I can't get online. Terrible product, tech support is someone you can't understand and has no experience. Stay away from this like the plague, it will only cause you heartaches.

    No good, May 17, 2006
By user (New York City)
Constant disconnects with my Intel Pro 2200BG for no good reason. Works fine on default settings with no security enabled. Once I enable WAP + SSID broadcast off the router starts disconnecting roughly 3-5 times per hour. Problem can be recreated everytime when I reset the modem and enable WAP again. Uprading to latest firmware didnt help either. Go with Linksys instead.

Good, router if you do not need RDP, May 11, 2006
By user (Jacksonville, FLORIDA United States)
This router has been working perfectly until I needed to vpn and RDP into my office desktop. I cannot use Remote Desktop Connection behind this router I followed the manufacturer instructions to open the RDP port, but that didn't work. I found the same complain about this router on a number of mailing lists. None of the users were able to use RDP behind this router.
So I'm going to buy a Linksys router to be able to connect to my office.

Reliable workhorse performer, May 8, 2006
By user (Saunderstown, RI, United States)
I have been running this unit for a couple of years, and have installed several of them at friends' houses without a hitch. This unit has always been reliable and easy to install for me. It offers WEP and WPA encryption, is easy to manage, and has simply worked without problems. I sometimes use D-Link's wireless range extenders for big houses, including mine. In general, I have had very good luck with D-Link products, and think of the DI-624 as a reliable workhorse.

Great, reliable router, April 25, 2006
By user (Augusta, GA USA)
I've used my DI-624 for nearly two years without incident. I've used other routers, including a couple by LinkSys and a 1st Gen Apple AirPort, and neither worked as well as the DI-624 has.

* It works great with BellSouth DSL.
* I have not experienced any major connectivity issues with it.
* It's easy to setup.
* It has great range (100+ ft)

I've read a number of the reviews on here where people have had bad luck with this product, and I can only hope that they were anomalies. I have nothing but praise for this router.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS, April 24, 2006
By user
This product does NOT work as advertised.
Dropped signal.
Lost IP address.
Won't save a new password.
Bad firmware updates.
Super G? No way.
Go with a known brand - LinkSys or anything else.
108Mbps??? Not even close.
In fact the last Firmware update states that they had to SHUT OFF several features because they didn't meet 802.11g standards.

Big waste of $$$$$$$

Great design, failed product, April 19, 2006
By user (San Francisco, CA)
This would be a terrific router if it worked as advertised. The configuation screens are easy to understand and have a huge range of options. Wireless throughput, when it works, is fast and robust. The key phrase, however, is "when it works."

First, the firmware usually crashes every time you save a configuration change. Upgrades have not solved this. If you're lucky you can recover by power cycling. If you're not, you have to hardware reset and start all over.

Second, if you don't use a DLink receiver your wireless connection will cycle on and off about every 10 minutes.

Finally, this isn't a problem with the router itself, but the "installation CD" is actually a 30-day demo for Network Magic, roping most users into needing the software. The manuals to configure the router yourself are PDFs hidden in the "bin" folder. That's outrageously unethical.

If you have a DLink receiver and already know how to configure a router, this might actually be good. But Dlink doesn't deserve anyone's business for this product.

    Horrid Range, April 13, 2006
By user (Appleton, WI)
I bought this router so that I could use my work laptop at home with my home computer. It always had horrible range. If I was across the same room as the router, I would get two bars of signal if I was lucky. Recently, we moved the desktop to another room. That caused no signal reception from 10 feet with one wall in between.
At work there is a Linksys with a booster antenna. I get max signal at my desk surrounded by a ton of other electronic equipment, steel, and concrete. So I thought maybe I just need an antenna. I bought the DLink antenna. Now from 10 feet I'm back to the two bars of signal, with many dropouts.
Recently I've noticed the dropped connections with my desktop. That's a new thing that wasn't happening before.

I would strongly recommend getting something else...

    Lasted 5 days..., April 12, 2006

The other negative reviews are CORRECT on this one; after 3 days of use, it began faltering ("Network cable disconnected" message in Windows). It has now failed completely. The TS guys in New Delhi are of no help whatsoever. Avoid!

    Generally a good performer, March 29, 2006
By user (Nashville, TN USA)
This was my first wireless router at home. It was fairly easy to set up, although the setup utility was a bit difficult to navigate at first. The performance has been good, except for occasional dropped connections.

Was up and running almost immediately. Instructions are plain and easy to follow. Very good support.

Nice Simple Router, March 22, 2006
By user (St. Louis, MO)
This is a very simple, mostly preconfigured router right out of the box. I take it with me when I go to my other house that uses a DSL modem, and at home where I use a satellite internet connection. Both modems use 192.168.0.1 as their gateway address, so I don't even have to change either setting. I just plug it in and it comes right up.

I have a suggestion on initial setup. Try to compare the Quick Start instructions with the manual on the same topics, and you won't have any problems. The wizard didn't work for me, but the instructions got me through initial setup once I got all the numbers entered correctly.

Quality of the unit is good. I bought a re-furbished one on eBay that quit working about a year after I purchased it. The vendor replaced it no problem, and the replacement has been working fine for over a year. Everything here runs 24/7 so if there were any overheating/design issues, I would have found them. Most refurbs need a firmware upgrade and there were some internal differences between my old one and the replacement (the boards were totally different) though the outside apperance was identical. Both worked about the same.

Signal strength is adequate. I live in a frame house and it works everywhere except in a steel outbuilding 50' away. I'm currently using a D-Link 710 repeater to meet that need. My house is also three stories, and signal strength isn't the greatest up high (the unit is in the basement). This is typical of most wireless routers, they are designed to throw the signal from side to side instead of up and down. I put another 710 upstairs and I have "excellent" signal everywhere. My D-Link seems to have as much signal strength as my neighbor's Linksys that he is using at my other house. Neither one transmits very far through concrete blocks.

I've installed one at work inside a pretty involved network subnet, and the only issues we had with it there was to drop the router's MTU setting down to 1000 to accomodate some cheap Windows laptops so they could get larger downloads. This did not seem to affect speed or range at all.

Downsides:
The router will do some basic firewall functions like URL blocking and it lists connected users, but beyond that only offers cable checking as an added feature.

Upsides:
For the price, it's a great way to get started with wireless for not much money. The website is a great resource of information on networking, and will get you going quickly.

Summary:
I give the item five stars as I am completely happy with it's performance, and as far as value, they are available very reasonably priced here and elsewhere. The documentation is good, but might be confusing for a first timer.

This is a good solid product.

Great product and great warranty/service, March 17, 2006
By user (Virginia, USA)
I got this router 2 years ago and was very pleased with it until it died on me a few weeks ago - it may be due to my 2 year old dropping it a few times or not, who knows. Fact is the product came with a 3 year warranty and the tech support was so thorough in trying to help. But in the end, I shipped my defective unit to them and they shipped me a BRAND NEW replacment unit - same DI 624, not refurbished. The software it ships with has improved since 2 years ago but they make it too dummy and don't put the security stuff as a standard which was disappointing since regular folks don't think of security unless it slaps them in the face. Security is in the extended install which they put as an option.

DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER, March 1, 2006
By user (Colorado)
After a few hours it began to reset every few minutes. I had the unit replaced, and the replacement did the same thing. I tried every trick I could find in all the online forums, and nothing worked. This is a piece of garbage. I switched to Netgear and had no problems.

ok product but not for gamers, February 24, 2006

POOR PRODUCT - WARNING BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK, February 20, 2006
By user (Tucson, Arizona)
I am the IT Manager for my company and we purchased several of the DI-624 routers for our remote offices. Despite repeated resets and upgrading of the firmware they peform poorly and are unreliable. Save your money and consider buying the LINKSYS WRT54G or WRT54GS. I have purchased 6 of the WRT54G's as replacement routers and have not run into a single problem. They are amazing! If you do your research on the DI-624 you will see that most reviews show this to be an inconsistent product. Technical support at DLINK is not helpful.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT ROUTER!!!!!!!, February 12, 2006
By user (Maracay, Venezuela)
This is my first wireless router ever and so I din't know anything about them... To select the approriate router for me I had to read A LOT of reviews all over the internet... After 2 weeks, I decided for this beauty (I was hesitant between a Linksys and this one...). Now I am very well surprised and glad to have this D-Link! The set-up was extremly easy and quick and the range is amazing! I have no dead spots in my 2 story house and the signal is maximal all over! I really recommend this router....
