    very satisfied, February 22, 2004
By user (Brookline, MA United States)
I am using the router with a DWL-G650 card which I bought at the same time. The setup was easy...I followed the quick installation guides for both products. To get the full 108MB transfer speed I had to download updated drivers for the DWL-G650. I needed to know how to update drivers by going to WinXP System/Hardware Tab in Control panel. The installed firmware on the router is version 2.28, which works fine. IMPORTANT: Check your firmware and drivers are up to date (this is explained on the D-Link website) or you will be frustrated in getting full speed. One should be comfortable with computers before attempting to set this router/wireless card combo up. However, there were no unforeseen difficulties and I can't imagine it being easier.

The D-Link support website is EXCELLENT and highly recommended. Check it out support.dlink.com before you buy!

Poor documentation and a few bugs, February 19, 2004
By user
It took an unusally long amount of time to set this router up. The documentation is rather poor; it covers the basics that most people need to know, but has no in-depth information on "what it all means." I already had a 2-Wire router and I just wanted to use the D-Link router as a bridge so that I could add some wireless devices to my network. Finally I figured out that I had to turn off the DHCP server on the D-Link and assign it a static IP address on the same network as the 2-Wire. It took a long time because the user interface is very poorly laid out and is very anti-intuitive. Most people won't notice this because they'll just run the "Wizard" and be done. But for advanced setup you might have to spend quite a bit of time trying all the different settings and cursing to yourself.

Another problem is that every time you turn off the router the date and time get reset to the year 2002, and the automatic time-set feature using NTP doesn't work at all.

Huge improvement over previous models, February 16, 2004
By user
Having worked with a 714 and 614, I was about to go to Linksys for my "G" Upgrade. But reviews seemed to favor the Dlink 624.
Well, set up was slick. Performance is great. I had problems with Checkpoint VPN, so I wrote Dlink an Email. Within 4 hours I had a reply that WORKED. I do wish it had 2 antennas. I think the older models had a little better signal strength.

Wireless devices cannot communicate with Wired Devices, February 15, 2004
By user (Maryland)
While all other features of this product work fine, there is one key deficiency that is not evident to consumers via presales information. The problem is that computers with wireless network adapters cannot access devices/computers that are physically plugged into the router's ports. This was confirmed by DLINK's level two support. DLINK simply won't talk to you about this limitation because they consider it a "networking issue" and therefore, you're on your own (aka SOL).

How will this impact you? Well, if you want to do file sharing between a laptop and desktop computer you're going to have a problem. In my case, I have a DLINK DP-300U print server plugged into the router. I can print to it just fine via wire, but I can't print via wireless. Can't even ping it from wireless.

I mean, the fact that you can't form a network amongst the devices connected to this product via wired and wireless connections is an amazing oversight. No, it's not firewall software, etc., etc. Using a laptop with a USB "wired" adapter and two "wireless" (g and b) adapters, the same result appeared in all tests. Wired worked for communicating with devices physically connected to the DI-624, but wireless did not.

In case I wasn't clear earlier, all devices, wired and wireless can talk to the DI-624 and they can access the Internet. Again, the problem is that on the DI-624, wired and wireless devices cannot communicate, making a home network a pipe dream. All devices in these tests interacted perfectly with the DI-624's DHCP server and all were on the same subnet.

    Good Router, February 13, 2004
By user (Enfield, CT United States)
Although I no longer own the DI-624, my experience with the device was positive. I enabled Super-G w/ Static Turbo exclusively, so that it communicated with the DWL-G650 CardBus that I had at the highest possible speeds. For Internet access, it was connected to a DSL modem.

I used my laptop with the CardBus in every room of my house. At the farthest point from the router (about 45 feet spanning 3 standard walls at varying angles ), the cardbus' strength readings hover around 50-55% and my throughput averages 48Mbps. I have transmitted rather large TIFFs (I work in the printing industry) from my laptop to my computer, which is wired to the router, without fail or concern for speed.

I RMA'd the DI-624 router and the DWL-G650 CardBus because I could not find another D-Link product to complete my wireless networking needs. I bought a DWL-2000AP along with the router and card so that I could (at least I thought I could) connect another wired network wirelessly to the router. Unfortunately, the DWL-2000AP is not compatible at all with the DI-624, despite what D-Link's product description web page for the DWl-2000AP states. (This has been confirmed with D-Link's technical support.)

Please note that if you have two wired networks located in separate parts of your house and you wish to connect them wirelessly with D-Link products, you will have to use two DWL-2000APs. If you want Internet access, then you'll need to add a wired router to it. For details, check out D-Link's web site. The information is there; it's just buried.

Overall, I was pleased with the performance of the DI-624. If you have simple networking needs such as sharing files, a printer, or an Internet connection between several laptops and wired computers, then consider the D-Link DI-624.

P.S. Because I needed to wirelessly connect two separately wired networks, support a wireless connection for my laptop, and share an Internet connection to all of the computers, I ended up buying the following Netgear products: WGR614 Wireless Router, WG511 Wireless Card, and WGE101 Wireless Bridge.

Not perfect, but very pleased overall, February 12, 2004

I purchased the DI-624 (rev. B) router, primarily based on a price and dealer recommendation (the router was the same price as the Linksys unit, but the PCI card and notebook cards were both $20 bucks less). I was a little dismayed at first. Upon installation of both wireless cards and the corresponding software for all three pieces of hardware, I was unable to connect to the internet through either machine. However, I called D-Link technical service, and was actually connected to a real person within 5 to 7 minutes (note: this was during the usual 5pm to 7pm high usage period). The tech was able to correct the problems within 10 minutes. So far performance has been comparable to the speed that I was experiencing when hardwired directly to my cable modem. I do not have any experience with any other home-user based wireless set-ups, but I would not hesitate to recommend D-Link to anyone who is looking for a cost effective wireless set-up.

Easy and Great Speed, February 10, 2004
By user (NY)
This is my first wireless ethernet router. The setup was quick and easy. I had it running within 10 minutes out of the box. I live in a 3 story town house. My computer setup is on the first floor. I get 54 mps throughout the whole house. I haven't set up the firewall or encryption yet, I'm sure it will affect the speed a little. Overall, very impressed and happy with the results.

Audible ringing noise, February 9, 2004
By user (Jamaica Plain, MA United States)
Hey. I've got an apple airport card in my desktop dual g4. I plugged the router into my roomates pc and bingo my mac recognized it. end of story. However, this thing emits a really high pitched ring that is annoying to my ears. I dunno if anyone else gets this or not, or if it just happens with all these things. Anyway, just beware.

Could not be easier!!!, February 8, 2004
By user (Monroe, LA USA)
I selected the DI-624 router, DWL-G650 card bundle after reading the numerous reviews concerning the easy of setup and encryption options D-Link has. I had a basic understanding of how to set up a network but had never done so and was a little hesitant. I have been pleasantly surprised and how easy it all worked. You always hold your breath waiting for something to go wrong but it didn't here.

I installed the DWL-G650 card first in my laptop and it was installed and ready to go in less than 5 minutes. The instructions are about as straight forward as you get. Insert the CD to install the drivers, put the card in and turn on the laptop. Windows will see the new equipment and complete the installation process. That's it!

Next was the router that would have a direct Ethernet connection to my desktop. The DI-624 has 4 ports for a direct cable connection so I would not need a wireless card for the desktop. In the box were 2 cables to make the connection from my cable modem to the router and then the desktop computer. This was a nice surprise since I figured I would have to buy one and in fact had already done so. The steps to install this were just as easy as the laptop card. You unplug the modem and turn off the computer. Connect the modem to the router, the router to the computer. Turn on the modem, wait about 1 minute for the connection to be re-established, plug in the router, and turn on the desktop. From there you follow the Wizard to set up the network which takes 2-3 minutes and Voila' you're up and running. That's it!!! Total time was about 1 hour and only because I kept reading and re-reading the instructions, the actual work time was about 15 minutes total for both.

The only hiccup I had was the laptop didn't have a connection initially even though it showed the card installed. I had left it running while setting up the router and after thinking about it for a minute wondering why it wasn't working I rebooted the laptop. It recognized the network and has worked great ever since. The direct cable connection with the desktop is at 100Mbps, the wireless connection is 54Mbps. There is not difference between uploads or downloads I can tell with either connection

I am definitely happy with both items and would strongly recommend them.

I purchased the DI 624 and DWL G650 combination. The price was great and the advertised feature set impressive. I received a 624 Rev C and and a DWLG650 Rev B4. Out of the box setup in about 10 minutes. Then I went for the SuperG mode (108mbps) and got it working when in close proximity to the access point even though the Dlink Air Plus configuration utility said my connection was poor. Went about 75' away and my signal was listed as excellent but could only achieve 54mbps. Next I tried to enable WPA-PSK, the main reason I bought this combo. I spent around 2 hours trying to get this to work to no avail. The online help at Dlink is outdated by about six months. My Rev of card is not even listed, I contacted tech support via email and I did receive a response in 48 hours but the response was elementary and had been tried in many variations. My router boots itself so far around once a day for no reason and I occaisonally lose wireless connection while surfing. I have 15 years in networking and have built many wireless networks. While this product has potential it does not work as advertised. There are definitely isssues with the advanced features of this router and card. A home user might be able to live with this but this will not suffice for anyone in business. Dlink needs to address these issues. There are many posts on the internet for this hardware with the same issues.

    Great Product/weak technical support, January 31, 2004
By user (Redondo Beach, CA USA)
If you're comfortable setting up your own wireless network, this is an amazing product. Coupled with the DWL-G650, and updated software, this connection screams!

However, if you're looking for techncial support, be advised that the outsource technicians don't know what they're talking about, and you'll most likely need to get to Tier II level support before you hit the jackpot of someone actually knowing something about the software/firmware/OS interface.

If you have McAfee Firewall installed, you may need to reinstall a .dll to make this work.

Very poor quality product and almost non existing support, January 29, 2004
By user (Columbia, SC USA)
Buy only if you do not need to use it or if you have lots and lots of time to experiment with settings yourself:
-Worst customer service ever.
-Technical support telephone wait time is horribly long.
-Router reboots every few hours, even when there is no traffic.
-Router drops wireless connection about once per hour requiring that VPN links be re-established.
-Router cannot configure any wireless channel but 6
-Wireless link Indicator LEDs on both ends don't behave as manuals describe, so aren't much help in troubleshooting.
-Advanced features are not well described in the documentation and there are no samples to use.
-Signal strength and quality is very inconsistent

I get 108mpbs but it took 10 hours of hard work, January 26, 2004
By user (NYC)
The DI-624 is a very powerful Router with great signal strength. I am using Time Warner Roadrunner Cable here at my home in NYC and set up was simple. It took me 10 minutes to get 54 mpbs on my laptops. All the problems I had involved using the DWL-G650 card on my 3 Fujitsu Laptops and trying to get 108 mpbs. My Win XP Professional laptops recognized my DWL-G650 pc card and connected to the wireless network, but the d-link's own utility could not see the card and the network. Customer support at D-Link was clueless and inept. Don't even bother trying to call them. They will only make the situation worse. After 10 hours of pain and suffering, I finally was able to update D-Links Driver to the internal modem of my laptop. XP Professional was very stubborn. But I won out. The 624 Router gets 5 stars from me. The DWL-G650 gets only 3 1/2. D-Links customer service gets a Zero. Unless you are good at computers, get a Pro to set this up for you. It is hard.

It took a while to get setup but now seems worth the wait, January 26, 2004

Bought the DI-624 Router with the DWL-G650 Wireless card as a combo. When I first got it the router setup with ease but I couldn't get the Card to work at all on my Dell Inspiron 4000. After 6 hours or wrestling with it, finally had to do a system restore of my laptop to clean off what I had put on since it hung my system completely. After a few calls with Dlink and Dell mobile support, I downloaded the latest Bios for my Dell notebook which supports 32 bit computing (the card requires 32 bit) and tried it again. This time the Wireless card was recognized and worked but sporadically (used the Dlink configuration utility). When I restarted my machine, the router and card were talking to each other but I could not establish a connection again. Spoke with Dlink support (yes it takes quite a while on hold to finally get through to them but they were helpful) and they finally told me to use the Windows XP wireless zero config setup program. Wouldn't you know, it. Now it all works. With 108mbps throughput as well. I don't have a big apt but signal strength is excellent throughout.

All I can say is be patient, wireless setup is not as straightforward as any of the mfrs. say and for all the Dell notebook users out there, make sure you have your BIOs updated to the latest or you might pull your hair out like I did.

Hope this helps all the other non-techies out there.

Disappointing News: Latest revisions are not very stable, January 23, 2004
By user
OK. I was very careful and made sure that I bought only the latest revisions of the DI-624 (H/W C2 and F/W 2.28) and the companion DWL-G650 (H/W C1 and F/W 3.00). I downloaded an upgrade to the -G650 even so. I view this as a system and frame my remarks thus. Also, I used to have a Netgear 114P firewall/router/print server which, after a couple of firmware upgrades, was rock solid until it simply died. I expect similar performance from the Dlink stuff. So, the review:

The system was easy to install and configure if you consider a 'default' system as truly 'configured'. For anything else, the setup parameters aren't well defined and they are not grouped together in logical places. The manual is of little help in setting up the advanced features of the firewall: it has lots of pictures but few examples.

The system has been on-line for three weeks now. Throughput isn't bad and it doesn't seem to slow down my Cable Modem connection with its firewall activity one bit. But there are a few too many 'issues' for such a highly-touted consumer product:

-Router reboots at intervals ranging from twice per hour to once every 5 days, even when there is no (known)traffic. The last reboot can be seen in the log file, but reboots clear the log so the number of reboots since last viewing can't be known for sure. All internet connections drop for a time during a reboot. This can play havoc with a VPN connection (or, I would think, gaming!).
-Router seems to reboot when it encounters certain inbound traffic. Online Firewall test web sites can illustrate this. I assumed that a firewall would itself withstand the very attacks it guards against?
-Wireless card must be manually connected using the Dlink utility every time laptop is booted up. Although the card indicates that it has established a link, one doesn't exist!
-"108 Mbit" link is not indicated very often when Dynamic mode is selected.
-Dlink email tech support refers all but the most elemental question to their phone support lines.... where the waiting can be an eternity.

Their are some nice reviews about the DI-624 in print. But search the web and you can find many complaints similar to mine about the '624. The D-Link DI-624 and DWL-G650 really need further maturing (a couple more firmware revisions?) before they can be recommended.

No WPA support = subpar security, January 22, 2004
By user (Amerika)
Although this router supports WEP, it does not support WPA, such as the Linksys WRT54G. This makes the security not as tight and may be a showstopper if you are concerned about hackers. However, the router web screens are really intutive and great. Setting up servers behind this is a snap as well. Good range, but you have to find the right channel as it seems overly susceptible to other wireless networks.

A very happy wireless user, January 22, 2004
By user
I just purchased the three items from D-link to start my home network (DI-624, DWL-G650, and DFE-530TX+) I was able to get the system up and running within 30 minutes. I was very please with the Quick start manuals and the Web interface to configure the router.

Also, I've check the firewall security and it's fairly good (there is a problem with port 113 not being totally stealth but the web site has a configuration change fix that.)

I was able to successfully load the firmware and driver changes to bring the network up to 108Mbits. The only issues that I've had is getting the WPA to work. From reading articles on-line, I may need an XP service patch to fix this problem.

Otherwise, I've been very pleased with this product and the easy at which I was able to setup my network, connect the internet, and configure the MAC filtering and firewall.

Once again, D Link puts out crap!, January 21, 2004
By user (Blairstown, New Jersey United States)
As I write this I am ONCE AGAIN on hold with D link tech / customer support for well over 2 hours. I have spent many DAYS now on the phone with them, yes shame on me for not returning this stuff in the first place but I already had several machines with Dlink cards on my network so I foolishly thought that by sticking with the same company things would work well. WRONG!

I have worked in IT for years and configured networks for 10's of thousands, trust me, I know how to do this.

This is just one of 4 new D Link products that I have purchased over the last 2 weeks.

With out boring any one with the details suffice it to say that OUT OF THE BOX 2 of their products have been DOA. Router and an Access Point. Also 2 PCI cards that were completely incompatible with 2 of my systems.

Then there is the false advertising plastered all over their boxes. Upgrade to 108Mbps with a free firmware download. Well when you go to the site it says not yet available for my revision. Then you talk to tech (brain dead) support and they tell you that Dlink will NEVER be writing new firmware for this product. DON'T BE FOOLED!

Then there is the endless hold for an RMA, worthless tech support, even at level 2, and worthless non existent customer service.

Stay away, do NOT buy their products unless you have a thing for endless frustration.

I would return all of these products in total if it didn't mean having my network down for days. I will be replacing all of these products as soon as possible though.

Go with another company.

Go with another brand, January 20, 2004
By user (Redford, MI United States)
I purchased the DI-624 w/ the DWL-G650 PCMCIA card. I did this mainly on the fact of the reviews and that it will do 108mpbs wireless.

The router CONSTANTLY emits this high pitched tone. I checked the web for more info and apparently i'm not the only one. It's a design flaw with the Rev. C. model.

I called D-Link technical support and between that gimp clearing his throat and coughing in my ears all he had to say was that it makes this noise while it's broadcasting a wireless signal. So I turned off wireless access, and it still makes the same noise.

I felt this odd because the HUGE WAP's I have installed at work (that cover an area of 300+ yards) are completely silent.

Skip this product if you can and definately buy outside the D-Link product line. Between my experience with this product and D-Link technical support, I will never buy any D-Link item ever again.

As many other people have mentioned, i've very weary about the positive reviews on this item. Whether they are actully customers or D-Link employees killing spare time.

Great wireless router, January 16, 2004
By user (Lewisville, NC United States)
This is the third router I've had but the first wireless router. This router allows multiple VPN tunnels which was important to me. Every router I've had has been easy to set up and the D-link was no exception. I also like how easy it is to update the firmware. I have three computers hooked up using the ethernet ports and one computer hooked up using a D-link Extreme-G PCI card and have had no trouble at all.
