    Still disappointed...., April 25, 2004
By user
I had the first generation Dlink DI614+ which worked nicely except for the reboot/lost connection problem whenever there's heavy traffic when I run more than one P2P programs, upgraded to the 624 router and the DWL-G650 PC card, same problem, also the WPA-PSK feature is flaky and when you have this security turned on and you lose connection due to heavy traffic it's a b*tch to get the DWL-G650 to talk to the router again, I essentially had to go back to the old driver (for the DWL-g650) on the CD (2.36 I think) and use WEP instead of WAP-PSK

If you don;t do any heavy P2P downloading this router should be fine for surfing and light P2P downloading

I hope they will fix the firmware soon other than that the router has nice features and easy enough to configure (for me at least and I work in the IT industry)

Constant reboots. Annoying., April 22, 2004
By user
This is a great router if you don't plan on ever doing any serious usenet downloads or p2p file sharing.

The massive traffic generated by either of these applications makes the router think it's being pinged to death. Instead of filtering out the requests or doing something else, the router reboots itself! How great is that. Several firmwares later and the problem remains.

As of the 2.42 firmware, this router is vulnerable to the 'targa3' exploit, a test of which results in a reboot. Many other routers are not vulnerable to targa3, but this one is.

I'd advise against the DI-624. Its been nothing but trouble.

    Disappointed with D-Link, April 19, 2004
By user (Austin, TX)
The product may perform up to your expectations but I only hope you never have to interact with D-Link's support organization. After dealing with conflicting, contradictory and completely erroneous information from their support organization, I have come to the conclusion that I don't care to do business with D-Link again.

I hope that if you do by a D-Link product it works flawlessly (which mine did not), and you never have to call their tech support organization.

Good luck.

    DI-624 AND DWL-650, April 17, 2004
By user (LYNN HAVEN, FL United States)
I DID FOLLOW ALL THE RECOMENDATION BASE ON THEIR WEBPAGE IN HOW TO INSTALL THE SYSTEM. THE EQUIPMENT IS GOOD. HOWEVER THE SIGNAL OF THE EQUIPMENT IS VERY WEAK. I DID CONTACT THEIR TECH SUPPORT, BUT THE SITUATION WAS WORSE. BETWEEN 5 TO 7 FEET FROM THE BASE, I DID HAVE VERY GOOD SINAL, ONES A WAS MORE THAN 10 FEET FROM THE BASE SIGNAL WAS GOING LOW OR VERY LOW. I DID HAVE COMPAQ BEFORE AND THEIR SIGNAL WAS BETTER BUT THEIR EQUIPEMENT WAS BAD. TRY TO LOOK OTHER EQUIPMENT I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS ONE.

Early version works great, April 16, 2004
By user (Beautiful Southern California)
I have been using the early version (hardware "B1") of this product since March of last year, without a single issue. I kept the original firmware (1.1), because I used to work for these people and I know that change isn't always a good thing.

I still haven't upgraded my wireless adapter to "G", using a dwl-120 usb adapter that is 802.11b and works just fine all the way across the house. The encryption works like a charm, even with 802.11b. I'll get a "G" adapter one of these days, but I just don't see the need at this time.

The constant "rebooting" problem people are having is probably a result of this new "firmware upgrade". Honestly, there isn't much of a difference between D-link's products and Linksys's. I do prefer the features of the D-link overall and D-links reliability has improved. I would harp on D-link's tech support about this "rebooting" issue until they make a fix.

I finally upgraded from an older dlink router. The difference was incredible. I was online in 5 minutes without any setup required at all.

    Great router, April 13, 2004

My internet speed was slowing down to almost dialup speeds. I decided to purchase the D-Link DI-624. I upgraded from a netgear product (WGR614). I was experiencing, low range, weak signal and continous reboots of the router. This router is just fantastic. Set up was easy and my problems have disapeard.

Good, could be better, April 12, 2004
By user (Los Angeles, CA United States)
Good points: Easy to setup, works right out of box, good range on wireless

Bad points: It will randomly reboot, dropping all wired and wireless connections. I have ver C2 with firmware 2.42 and the problem persists.

Until they fix this problem, I cannot recommend this product.

Software glitches prevent configuring this router, April 11, 2004
By user (Vineland, New Jersey United States)
I bought this router for my new Verizon DSL connection and hooked up the Ethernet cables from the DSL modem to this router and from the router to one of my computers. However, when trying to configure the router on D-Link's website, I clicked on the "Run Wizard" button there but got no reaction at all. Then I replaced D-Link's firmware version 2.28 with version 2.37 offered on their site but that did not help, the "Wizard" button remained totally inert.

I asked D-Link for help and they emailed me instructions for configuring the router without running the wizard, without explanation or apology for the dead wizard. Following these instructions brought me into a closed loop that returned me always to the same "WAN Settings" page. I described this to D-Link and they gave me yet another set of instructions for bypassing that wizard, again without comment why the earlier ones had not worked. These new instructions produced the same closed loop to always the same "WAN Settings" page on their site.

I had told D-Link that I could not use the DSL connection without first configuring their router through which it passed before arriving at my computer, but they added to their latest instructions that if these did still not work, I should "pull the power out of the modem for one minute" and then try again. They never explained how I can switch off a modem that is not on in the first place, so it turns out that I can only configure their router with a functioning DSL modem but I first have to configure their router before I can get that DSL modem to function -- a typical chicken-or-egg problem.

Until D-Link can fix its website to enable the allegedly simple configuration of their router, and until their tech support can understand the questions sent to them, this router is worthless to me.

    Stay Away!, April 11, 2004

I have this router and just bought the Linksys WRT54G to replace it. BEFORE you buy the D-Link 624 go to DSLREPORTS and read the D-Link Forum section. As for all the trouble, I thought it was me. I get constant disconnects (rebooting router) I can't get my PocketPC with a Socket WLAN card to connect and my configure screens won't paint correctly. This router is a TURKEY. Those that got it to work are LUCKY! I'm on firmware 2.42, which is current as I write this. I originally bought the 624 (at Costco) because my 614+ fritzed out. Why did I even waste my time. I learned about the DSLREPORTS forum by accident, didn't know of it before I purchased. The 624 is going back.

COMMENT: To the person who didn't find this review helpful, what would you have liked me to say? I hope you enjoy your new DI-624!

Save my choppy cable internet service, April 9, 2004

After having the SMC router for 3 years, I had an intermittent DNS lookup problem since few months ago after I had Vonage. Then I bought this router with the G650 802.11g card. It rocks! Somehow the DNS lookup problem is gone and it is extremely fast. The only issue is that I cannot get it to work in 108Mbps even with the newest firmware/driver...

U are forced to use Encryption to do Access Control (bad), April 7, 2004
By user (Proud to be in Washington DC)
If u want to keep others from using ur router u HAVE TO use encryption [with a key] on this router to keep them out. Found this out through Dlink tech support. Other routers (Netgear, Linksys, etc) can do Wireless Access Control with MAC addresses or encryption. Use both if u want really secure control.

Well, I don't want to bother with encryption and I don't want other ppl using my router. Can't do that with this router. I wish I had known this b4 I bought the DI-624.

The indicator light interface in the front is very primitive. They are small, and blinking means normal. Usually blinking or a different color signals something is WRONG. There's only one colour. Kinda counter-intuitive.

The latest e-manual is outdated and does little explaination of the features.

Doesn't work with ALCATEL DSL modems !, April 6, 2004
By user (Markham, Ontario Canada)
It might be a great product but !
it will not work with ALCATEL DSL modems !

I spent 2 hours setting this thing up and searching
in D-LINK web site just to discover that I am
missing a "special cable" that can't be purcashed anywhere..

They will sent it to me for free with-in 4 business days...
but , what will happend if the cable is too short ?
then I will have to order another one ?

This doesn't make any sense.
BETTER GET A LINKSYS PRODUCT !

easy quick setup on a Mac G4 running Panther for this girl, April 2, 2004
By user
If you have basic computer knowledge and have opened a CPU box and installed anything in a PCI slot before this should be no problem for you.

I turned the power off to everything, plugged in the cables per the quick start guide into the cable modem and CPU, plugged in the router, and turned on the MAC G4. I didn't even need to access the website for the connection wizard, as the computer recognized it immediately. (I will probably configure this to my needs more later).

I installed a D-Link wireless access card into the PCI slot of the Windows computer after putting the CD in the drive, installing the driver, and turning off the PC with the CD still inside. I turned the computer back on and it configured itself (Windows 2000 Professional) and an icon with a green light appeared in the lower right corner. I was able to access the web immediately.

Easy and simple if you understand computers and have this setup. Be sure to turn encryption on through the web browser D-Link settings, and put your firewall up.

The wireless connection goes smoothly through 2 steel doors, down the hall 200 ft. to another apt. in a high rise. My mom thanked me (her PC) and gave me some Ben and Jerrys (she kept saying 'we should wait till your brother is off work to help you'). Screw him, I did it myself and its fine!

Great router! Trust me I've tried a few!!!, March 31, 2004
By user
After reading a lot of pessimistic reviews of this product on the internet I was scared to try yet another wireless router. I trield the 802.11b version from Netgear...do not buy that one! It had horrible range, rebooted my computer several times. I don't know if this was because I was using the USB adapter or what but the range went from good to bad frequently. So lets move on to this beauty. First of all anything you read about being hard to set up is bull. I'll run you through my setup process. I wanted to hook up my desktop and notebook wirelessly. And hook the router up to my Xbox. This is what you do... Hook the router up to your cable box, hook your main computer up to your router. Go to a web site that D-link provides in your manual. It sets up your system. All you have to know is what type of setup you have through your internet provider. If you are cable its Dynamic, DSL is probably something else, etc. All I did is call Comcast, they told me, boom done. After this was working I hooked up my labtop with the cardbus adapter (easy easy easy just follow the instructions which are like 3 steps). Same goes for the desktop using a PCI adapter from D-link. Now I should mention I was going against all the recommendations of putting the router upstairs for better range. I put my router downstairs with my xbox hooked up directly to it. I have my desktop upstairs. I attached the router to the wall hoping that might help with the range although it probably wouldn't matter. My desktop works great and the signal has been "very good" the entire time and is hooked up at 108 mps...granted that is not the speed my provider is giving yet! One more hint!!! You might have a problem in XP in that when I clicked on my connection I found that there was a 'default' and a 'linklys' setting for the network. Don't ask me where 'linklys' came from but it was on my laptop and desktop. Simply select default in both the top area and bottom area. If you don't and it says linklys you will not connect at a very high speed. I hope this review helped! I am by no means an expert but have faith, this will work for you...but if it doesn't its not like you can't return it!

Excellent wireless router, March 29, 2004
By user (Princeton, NJ)
I did quite a bit of research on wireless routers before finally going with this product from D-link. Security wise, you shouldn't have to worry, b/c not only does it have WEP and WPA-PSK features, it should be fully compatible (thru a firmware update) with the new security standards coming out with the 802.11i upgrade this summer. It also allows VPN passthrough, so I was able to connect to my company's network from home.

I am pretty familiar with computers, though knew nothing of wireless routers on my setup. The setup was easy, and the web interface easy to use, though I have yet to explore all the different options. Overall speed is very fast (used in conjunction with the wireless card DWL-650), around 40 MBPs on the first floor (80% signal strength), and ~ 30 mpbs (70% signal strength) upstairs. Range is good, although strangely, I only get a 60% reading 1 foot from the base station. I live in a large brick house, with perhaps one other wireless connection from my neighbors.

I did encounter the trademark problem of initially having the router reboot every few minutes back to April 1, 2002. If you read the boards carefully, it's recommended that you do a full factory reset (some junk leftover on the memory needs to be cleared out), and make sure that you hold the button in for at least 30 seconds, leaving the power on, then off, then on again. By then, the load firmware page should appear on the web interface, and you can load the latest firmware (2.48 I think). (After loading the firmware, it doesn't tell you when it's done, so you'll have to go ahead and reboot both your computer and the router.)

Also, disable any built-in internal wireless cards you might have; I had an Intel Wireless Pro 2100 on my IBM Thinkpad that was causing problems with the functioning of the DWL-650.

After applying those two fixes, my network has been running flawlessly. Tech support is 24/7, and I got help from a very helpful tech that was fortunately based in the US!

I intend to buy the signal booster and usb wireless adapter (for my printer) to eventually establish a true wireless network.

Am very happy with the products!

    DON'T BE FOOL - EXCELLENT PRODUCT!!!!, March 28, 2004
By user (Philadelphia, PA USA)
My first try with this product was terrible dissapointing. The router keep disconecting every 10/15 minutes.

Finally realized that the problem was not the router but my Wireless card. I have a Intel Pro/Wireless 2100B or something like that. It is 802.11b standard, and found out that not fully compatible with WEP encryption.

The solution? I installed Intel PROset Utilities which gives compatibility with every security standard at this time.

Now my connection works great, great range, great speed.

Before blaming the router, find out if your networking card fully supports WEP or any other security standards.

Works well with Mac G4; ethernet conn. to G3 unsolved!, March 23, 2004
By user (Buffalo, NY)
I bought this hoping to be able to create a home network consisting of my Powerbook G4 wireless (successful after 5-6 calls to d-link tech support and 1 each to verizon and Apple) and my older Powerbook G3 hard wired into the router.
I have tried various settings to get the G3 working, called D-link and verizon (says they dont support d-link) on this separtate issue and D-link basically says that because the router is finally working with my G4, it must be something other than their hardware, and they don't care to deal with it. If anyone out there has a mac g3 hard wired to this thing...or any ideas...I would love to hear from you.....jamadd@buffnet.net. As for the wireless performance, I am so far satisfied with the device. It is my first wireless router, so I have nothing to compare with.

This is a great product, March 22, 2004

How ecstatic am I about the D-Link DI-624 wireless-G router? The fact that I am typing this review, on my laptop, in the basement of my house, with 100% signal strength, while the router hums happily along up on the third floor sheds some light. I just upgraded to this router and PCMIA card setup from D-Link's wireless-B combo (DI-614+). This is a big improvement in range and speed. With the old router, I had a range of about 1 room around the one where the router was stationed. Now, I can roam throughout my entire house, and probably outside as well.

I am impressed. For the value, I think D-Link probably can't be beat. Excellent web site support and service, too.
