Finally found out how to fix the reboot problem!!, October 21, 2004
By user (Green Bay, WI)
I purchased this dlink router and the dlink airplus xtreme wireless adaptor in around July. It was working great for about a month but then the router starts to reboot every few minutes!! I tried everything and looked for help online but no help. I don't know how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled the program and everything, but didn't solve the problem. I called up the dlink support center but they seems like they don't even know how to solve this problem! Everytime I call them they would tell me to update my router to the latest firmware, but that never solved the reboot issue with the router.
Finally I found that there is a trick to solve this problem (or at least I never had the rebooting problem anymore..). First update your router to the latest firmware. Then whenever you want to connect to the internet, go to the "wireless network connection" configuration window, then go to "wireless network" tab. Click or check the "use windows to configure my wireless network settings". This would help you to detect and connect to the internet connection, just as what dlink recommended you to do in the manual. But the tricky part to this is that once you connected to the internet, go back to the same page and UNCHECK the "use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" as soon as possible. This would help you to stablize your connection without using windows to detect your internet connection since you are already connected to the internet.
I understand that this trick requires you to go to the wireless network connection setting page everytime you want to connect to the internet but this works like a charm to me. I never had any rebooting problems for months now and able to stay online for as long as I want :)
I hope this helps the people who are having the same problems because I was having the same reboot problem for months and I completely understand how painfull it is to get disconnect from the internet every few minutes!! I am not a computer expert at all so my assumption on how the wireless network setting works might be wrong, but this trick has been working perfectly for months now. Hope this would help you and Good luck!!

Put your money in something really good, not this!, October 19, 2004
By user (Miami, FL USA)
Bought this device even after some unfavorable reviews because of the big advertisement and it was expensive and thought that something bad would be really cheaper. Big mistake, the signal is so weak that I live in a 2 bedroom apartment (very small) and my systems report a low signal at 15 ft. Locks up a lot and have to reset very frequently, while the system is open (no security) it is fine but after some security configuration is a mess. (...)

Buy another router-unstable connections, October 19, 2004
By user (NY, USA)
DI-624 router frequently disconnects itself from all computers, wired and wireless, attached to it. What's more, it will reboot and might take up to 5 minutes to establish a connection, which may happen in the middle of a download. D-link suggests that you downgrade the speed to 10Mb which will reduce files transfer speed in your network by a tenfold. But the issue is not resolve. Upgrading to new firmware (2.50)won't resolve the issue either. Furthermore, replacing the network card for a new one won't resolve the issue. If you want to spend many hours fussing, calling & e-mailing tech support and rebooting a router and reconfiguring it until you are red in the face....go for it...

Works great and exc. tech support, October 18, 2004
By user (Too crowded SF Bay Area)
Works great, fairly easy to install and set up. Tech support is execellent even in the middle of the night PDT. Just remember to turn on your antenna!
I would recommend renaming the SSID from "default" so you know you are connected via your router and not your neighbor who may also use "default" as a name. And to make sure that your router is the top one in your available wireless network connections.
I changed the IP from what the original default D-Link tech support. Be to write down what you set the router's IP address in case you need to change settings.
Works fine with AOL 9.0 optimized software. No conflicts. Using a Toshiba A-65 laptop.
Took me a bit of time to understand wireless and LAN settings in Win XP. So problems I had were IE settings and not the router.
Maybe instructions could be a bit clearer. It took me a while how to figure out how to rename the SSID.

BUY IT!!!, October 17, 2004
By user (MA USA)
I've had the d-link for about 2 months. I was confused as to whether to buy it based on the conflicting reviews, but I decided to go ahead. THIS PRODUCT RULES. I had 2 PCs(wired) and 2 laptops (wireless) configured within 1.5 hours with the WEP encryption. The router works great. My advise is check out the software emulator on the dlink website - this lets you play with all the possible configuration settings and lets you see what you are getting into.

Working well so far, October 15, 2004
By user (Campbell, CA United States)
I bought this about a month ago and so far it has no problem. One thing I noticed is that it has much better range than the Netgear router (MR314) I had. it is very easy to set up, as some of you already pointed out. I don't have a wireless G adapter yet, so cannot comment on the speed gain.
Very pleased so far...
updated on 2/23/2006: It died today! First I lost wired connection; then it quit working completely...

This is a good router. It shows as what it's advertise but I have some installation issue. It is hard to set up. If you check everything what it said in its manual such as ipconfig, ping, or connect cable firmly, you still can not use it. Try to shut down everything about 10 min and restart. It may be help. I used with Dell Insprion 1150 and DWL-G650. Therefore, it got 4 stars.

Blazingly fast, but horribly unreliable causing much stress., October 5, 2004
By user (Seminole, Fl, USA)
Now if I wrote a review for this product the first month I had it, then I'd tell you this was the best wireless product I've owned to date. I like the filtering, I like the menus, and I like the ease of use. The help needs some work, but I'm knowledgable enough that I don't care.
Now comes the firmware updates. I started doing these because I'd notice maybe some quirks, or they said they fixed something major. Also I like to keep up to date on everything.
At the latest beta, normally I don't try beta's but I did to see if my problem that I'll mention shortly was fixed, they've really done a nice job on the wireless settings. Much better.
Ok so what did they break? Any hardwired form of connectivity. You can expect to loose your connection randomly on either the WAN port, or through any 1 of the 4 LAN ports. Very stressful if it worked for a few days then decides over the weekend that it'll need to be rebooted 10-15 times before you quit.
What makes this even more stressful is that you are still connected to the router wirelessly, and you can actively ping it at will. But if you, during it's personal strike, ping it from say a computer on the lan side, it doesn't respond. It goes completely dead. And the biggest problem is that rebooting it, or unplugging it doesn't necessarily work. Sometimes you have to do it many times in a row.
I've reported this to Dlink many times over the last few months... and... tired of the service, or lack of. If its something simple they are good about talking to you, but you get a tad bit technical, and they ignore you.
What do I buy now after investing in this technology? Netgear? I asked them a presale question and they told me to get the latest upgrade for the FIRMWARE of the device I was asking about!!!!!!! So I'm lacking a little faith right now.

Reboots randomly. Firmware has stability issues. Also drops WAN (PPPoE) connections randomly.

its all good but the manual is wrong & incomplete, October 2, 2004
By user (Columbia, SC)
Fellas, 1. If you want to use encryption - do not use wizard option on the routers webpage. Manual just doesn;t talk about it much - call support if you cant figure it out. 2. dont use the Clone MAC Address option as asked by their manual - else everytime you reboot your machine you will have to reconfigure the router and clone it again. atleast thats what happened with my computer (WinXP connected to Roadrunner).

Great little router, October 1, 2004
By user (Austin, Texas)
I bought this unit because my company was offering a (...)special pricing deal. I set it up and it all worked flawlessly. Then I updated the driver for my Fujitsu laptop and voila! I have a 108MB network at home! Great product!

Dlink software support is horrible, October 1, 2004
By user (Atlanta, GA)
Be aware that if you buy this product, the Dlink firmware has historically been released full of bugs that are not frequently corrected. I am looking at Linksys or other routers to replace this one because of firmware bugs when using WPA encryption.
Recently, Dlink released firmware 2.45 and then after many complaints, added a note to their site stating that it is a beta version. I would think that a company that had solid firmware would not have to go back and change a released version of firmware to beta.

Great performce, price, and ease of use., October 1, 2004

Took it out of the box, connected the power and CAT5's, and I was done. There is also the option to completely customize the setup which i did after trying the vanilla config.
Best buy for the money.

Worst Ever, October 1, 2004

Works for about 3.5 minute intervals then disconnects. This product is the worst ever. Don't waste your money. Replaced with a Linksys, now wireless network NEVER disconnects.

Xtreme G not oso extreme., September 29, 2004
By user
Bought the router because of low price and because I have the D-Link DWL-G650 wireless card. Set the router to Static Trubo mode (suppose to provide highest speed with the use of other Xtreme G compatible cards) and it did not work with the card most of the time. Changed the settings to Dynamic Turbo and everything is great. Rate it as 3 stars only because it did not work in Static Mode when it is supposed to, otherwise it is a great router. The driver version I am using is 2.42. Version 2.45 is in beta state and should be available soon, maybe there will be a fix.

Have B? Get it. Have G? Wait, September 28, 2004
By user (SAN ANTONIO, TX United States)
I moved from B to G, from Linksys to Microsoft, almost a year ago. I was very happy with the speed enhancements, but MS's offering was weak. The WAN link would drop several times per day...very annoying. So, I went to Iraq for six months, and decided (while I was there) that I wasn't going to put up with crap that didn't work. When I got back, I purchased an entire D-Link super G system. Great stuff. In super G mode, my laptop and HTPC seem as if they're plugged directly into the DSL pipe. When non-super G folks come over, the speed decrease is noticable, but still very acceptable. Bottom line - If you're happy with what you've got, and it's working, keep it. If you're a B user looking to upgrade, give the super G a try; you won't be disappointed. If you're a G user already, don't bother, wait for the next great bandwidth leap.

Solid Router with Good Reliability, September 15, 2004
By user
I bought this a while back and have found it to be a good cornerstone of my network. I always update it to the newest firmware for the free added features and bug fixes. I find this router easy to use, easy to manage, and was easy to install.
I get good wireless coverage within my home and my USB 802.11g adapter (DWL-G122) for my laptop. I can pretty much be anywhere in my home and still get a solid connection that wont drop. I even play online games via wireless and have low pings while in a room away from the router.
Overall a good router with wireless functions to boot. Very nicely priced and more than enough features.

Poor hardwired network performance, September 14, 2004
By user (Baltimore, Md)
Bought this router because of some good reviews that I had seen for the wireless features (108)....But I also wanted to use it to connect some wired PCs to our broadband connection. After using it for a short while, the router seemed to lose the hardwired connections as if the router had rebooted..this increased in frequency to the point it became unbearable...D-link suggested flashing old firmware (but the link to the old firware is dead and the latest beta firware does not fix this problem).... Do a search on Google for "DI-624 reboot" and you will see that I am not alone with this problem. Going to return and purchase another brand.

Easy setup. Excellent range., September 12, 2004
By user
After reading numerous reviews and looking up range data on cnet, I decided to purchase the DI-624. Setup was easy and it quickly detected all my network settings. This model supports the improve WPA security. I live in a large 2 story house and have excellent signal strength in all areas of my house. I recommend this product to all. The only improvement I could see would be adding a print server tot he unit.
