Great for home network, won't support PPTP VPN, techs so-so, February 27, 2003
By user (Beautiful Northern New Jersey)
I've been running the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ with a D-Link DWL-650+ wirless card for about 6 months. The good: Easy install (READ the instructions FIRST!) Good connection quality and decent speed. Worked great for sharing my cable modem for Internet access, file sharing across computers, printer sharing. The utility that comes with the DWL-650+ card allows you to setup separate profiles for different wireless networks, a great convenience if you want to switch easily between home, work and Starbucks! The bad: The DWL 650+ PCMCIA failed after a few weeks. Tech support was really bad, blamed everything but the card. After about a dozen e-mails & phone calls I finally got a tech to admit the card wasn't working since the indicator wouldn't even light up. Replacement card required securing with my credit card and signing / faxing a 'cross shipment agreement' so they could ship immediately while my old card was being returned. Well they got my old card in a couple days but didn't ship the replacement for several weeks! After finally getting the defective card resolved (2 months!!) everything worked again fun until .. It wouldn't support my company's VPN connection through the wireless. (Wired connection does work though!) They're documentation says it supports PPTP VPN Pass through but after several more calls to their tech support, a bunch of configuration changes, the last tech finally said I 'had to understand that VPN requires too many packets for a wireless connection'. So why do my coworker's Linksys systems work fine then?! Bottom Line: It's fine for setting up a home network and sharing a broadband internet connection. But be wary if you need to do anything more sophisitcated, especially if you ususally need support. Me? I'm buying a Linksys and selling the DLink stuff!

Easy, reliable, and cheap, February 27, 2003
By user (Madison Heights, MI United States)
The access point was incredibly easy to set-up, I'm running Windows XP and I was all set up in about 15 minutes (one wired computer, and one wireless laptop). I've found it to be very reliable also. I've never come close to achieving the posted speeds (not a big surprise), but I still get about 7Mbps. My only knock is that in the configuration, you can't shut off SSID broadcasting.

Save current config? Don't believe it!, February 25, 2003
By user (Champaign, IL USA)
I'm actually happy with the performance of this router. Wireless is working fine with 2 laptops using a DWL-650+ PC card & a Linksys PC card, as well as a laptop & 2 desktops on the wired side. HOWEVER, contrary to the documentation my config has been blown away each time I've upgraded firmware (2). The first time, I saved my settings to the hard drive, but the file couldn't be read after the upgrade. The second time, I was prepared with a screen-print of my config.

D-link Air+ router, February 25, 2003
By user (San Jose, CA. United States)
I purchased this product because of it's advertised high transfer rate and the fact that it was a Wireless access point and router combined which would save space. When I went to install the configuration interface on my laptop it did not install completely. When I attempted to delete and reinstall it said the product was already installed. When I attempted to install again it said that the software had already been installed. Within 5 minutes I was not able to use my laptop. To correct this I had to reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows 2000 Pro on my Dell Latitude C-600. I then attempted to load the user interface on my HP PIII desktop and the Web Browser interface/configuration tool would not communicate with the Air+ router.I ended up returning the product and stuck with my old router. As a business owner who uses these products on jobs, I can't afford to install finicky products such as the Air+ router.

Recurring issues, February 23, 2003
By user (NEW YORK, NY United States)
... and have been struggling to get it working consistantly since. I have a Dell laptop with an internal truemobile wireless card. I think there are some compatability issues between the router and the card. I am constantly being disconnected briefly and reconnected. Several of my friends who have also tried this product with Cisco aironet cards have experienced similar problems. Tech support is clueless on how to fix this...

Really outstanding product for the technically challenged, February 16, 2003
By user (Baytown, Texas USA)
I had a very bad experience trying to install a Siemens router and exchanged it for this one. What a difference! The set-up was fifteen minutes and one five minute call to tech support. I was so impressed, I installed a D-Link ethernet router in our office. Same rapid simple set-up, and works really well so far. I highly recommend it for the home user who aspires to install equipment, such as a network, but doesn't have a high level of knowledge (like me).

I am the chief computer repairman at my place of business and I use this router at my home. I am extremely pleased with this piece of hardware. It has the highest encription ability (256 bit WEP), cheapest price, great tech support, and delivers great performance. I currently use this router to split my cable to modem to 2 desktop computers and 2 notebook computers. One desktop is connected with a direct wire, while the other three computers use the wireless method. I share one printer will all computers and each computer is using a different OS. The compatilibility with Netgear networking devices is high, but I have noticed a little difficulty with Linksys products. Linksys blames the problem on D-Link, but this merely frustrates me because if three computers will connect with a router, it is obvious if another computer will not connect than there is a problem with the network card.Whenever I have called D-Link I have always recieved helpful tech support but I also know that many other reviewers claimed to not have recieved this. For me, I have had very few problems with this router, and the two times I have, D-Link has helped me correct the problem. Pros: Great price Good tech support Great performance Highly compatable Stays connected over long distances through many walls Extremely user friendly Compatable with new 802.11G Well backed manufacturer's warranty New firmware still being produced by D-Link Cons: Difficulties with Linksys networking cards There is a newer standard out in the 802.11G If you are going to use this to share internet connection, I advise to save some money and buy this router. If you need high speed direct connection between computers than you should look into spending some more and buying the new 54G standard.

FAST, EASY AND A BARGAIN, February 13, 2003
By user
Baought this to share my Yahoo DSL account with older PC's in house. DI-614+ installed with PIII 866MHZ Netvista IBM with XP Pro, connected to Speedstream 5360 DSL Modem. Wireless connect to DWL-520 on a PII 350 with W2K (note: not the DWL-520+) and DWL-650+ on IBM ThinkPad T22 with W2K. The DI-614+ was installed in 12 minutes, of which 10 was to crawl around and connect cables behind PC. Software install was as described in picture-book manual: EASY EASY!Wireless network and internet sharing on other PCs (easy installs too) went live withing 1 hr. Compare this to the Netgear and others and nowhere will you get a device like this with these features for 70$ (89$ - 20$ rebate).

Solid choice, February 12, 2003

Coupled w/the D-Link AirPlus dwl-650+ PCI card, this is a solid choice. The toughest thing was getting my network config'd. I would recommend.

All iv had is trouble with this router. Drops connection ever so often. Slows down to a crawl with encryption turned on. Iv tried every possible of configuration setting, upgrading the firmware on my Lucent wireles card, the firmware on the router and still all the same problems exist. But the same laptop and wireless card work perfectly will the different wireless routers in my office and friends places. But with this router its horrible. I wouldnt anyone to buy this product.

Easy to setup and it's working as advertised, January 29, 2003
By user (my apartment)
I am very pleased that this went off without a hitch. I amazed my friend who is a lot more technical than me when I called him up saturday. I called him to get a recommendation on what brand to buy and he said D-Link is a little faster and more reliable than the others, so I trusted him and when I called him back that night he was amazed i was able to do it with out calling him once. I think the secret is that this came with a good start guide and a setup wizard when configuring everything. The only help I needed was when I called my ISP to get my connection info. Everything is running smoothly and both my roommate and I are now wireless with our laptops and we can have a setup like the old battleship board game and play games against each other and it is awesome. I'd recommend this to anyone with a laptop and the D-Link wireless card to go with it. It works right out of the box.

An Excellent Product!, January 27, 2003
By user
After educating myself about wireless networks and reading tons of reviews, I decided to purchase this router and D-Link AirPlus adaptors for my two notebooks and my desktop. In addition to its internal network functions, I am using the router to share a cable modem connection. I had no problem setting up the network and it essentially worked the first time. The range is sufficient to cover my 3500 square foot home in which my wife and I have offices at opposite ends. The router is positioned about halfway in between and the throughput is entirely satisfactory.I do wish D-Link's documentation was better. As a relative newcomer to networking, I was not sure that the router was set up correctly in terms of the firewall and encryption. The included documentation really doesn't explain the configuration options very well. It would be helpful to have some common network configurations illustrated along with their settings. But, all-in-all, it is an excellent product!

Simple, Cheap, Effective, January 25, 2003
By user (Arlington, VA United States)
It worked right out of the box. In the 4 months I've had it, I've only had to reboot it a couple of times. I added an external antenna so that I could beam my high speed internet connection to a neighbor across the street. I couldn't ask for much more, especially at this price.

D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ Wireless 33 Mbps router, January 25, 2003

Easy and quick setup. Using this wireless router with a Linksys cable modem on Comcast high speed Internet access. Used with both desktops and a notebook computer. Used with both Win98SE and WinXP Professional. Excellent range in 3-story home. Only complaint is size.

Works great! Easy setup for a total novice., January 24, 2003
By user (Torrance, CA United States)
I don't have anything to compare the 614+ to, but with my limited experience with it, I have no problems recommending it. I have no prior experience setting up this type of equipment. However, I had the router set up in 10 minutes on my notebook PC. It took only another 10-20 minutes to install & configure my second notebook PC with the 650+ wireless PC card. In less than 1/2 an hour, I was surfing away w/o cables! I live in an aptmt so don't have the luxury of testing the unit out from long distances or separate floors. However, I've had no problems in the 2 wks I've been using the unit. If you're looking for a simple way to network your home, I have no problems recommending the D-Link 614+ (or the D-Link 650+ PC card).

Excellent Router, Lousy documentation., January 23, 2003
By user
I found router to be excellent in quality. The instructions contain just five steps, if you follow them your router will work. However, I found beyond that the instructions are lacking. I tried several times to enable encryption. Each time I found I could configure my laptop to still "connect" to the router, but even simple paths such as for the router itself, failed to resolve. I found in reading the other reviews, most people who have successfully setup encryption had to contact technical support. While I am satisified the functionality exists, why a skilled software developer such as myself who has implimented his own VPN systems should need to contact technical support for such a trivial operation as enabling encryption. Thus, I only rate this a 4 star product. Unfortunately, D-Link does not make a compatiable Mini-PCI card. Mini-PCI cards tend to work much better than PCMIA cards, because of the larger antenna. After carefully considering my options I decided to purchase the Toshiba Mini-PCI card, rather than a D-Link PCMIA card. I've yet to find a place in the four story house where my laptop fails to achieve the Mini-PCI cards' maximum rate of 11 Mbps. I see one user reported problems with multiple people reading e-mail at the same time. I have not managed to reproduce the problem. The D-Link contains a fairly standard firewall, allowing you your own personal intranet. I would expect the firewall would only present problems if you are trying to use multiple machines as servers for machines on the internet. Bill

Simply remarkable, January 22, 2003
By user (San Francisco, CA)
This product is "simply remarkable". I have been shopping for a wireless solution since quite some time. I even bought a SMC wireless router but faced a lot of problems in setting it up. The D-Link router worked without I having to do much. I was successfully able to secure my wireless and wired network without a hassle using 128 bit WEP and MAC address security.

Easy install and good customer service, January 21, 2003
By user
I had this DI-614+ installed in a very short time and got it to work without any problem. The only thing I will not be satisfied is the Ethernet cable which is included in the box and had a little problem to hook up this router. After I switched the one w/ my current Ethernet cable then fixed this problem. The overall feeling is still good.

Reliable and easy to set up, January 16, 2003
By user (Mystic, Connecticut)
I'd been running a home network on another company's wired router, with a broadband DSL connection. It was functional, but about once a week, I needed to reset the modem, router, and re-boot the computers to keep the system running. The old router was destroyed when we took a close lightning strike during a thunderstorm. I found the DI-614+ and the DWL-650 card on a great sale, so decided to go 802.11.b compatible wireless for only [a little] more than it would have been to go back to a wired network. Setup (including WEP) was a snap from any of the computers on the network using the html based setup utility, and the network has stayed up for weeks at a time without a reset. The only reason I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 is the somewhat chunky design. ...UPDATED on 1/30 - I just brought home an iBook w/ an Airport card. Once I figured out what Apple needed to ID the network, the router has been working flawlessly.
