    Macintosh help, October 29, 2002
By user (Atlanta, GA United States)
I just spent a weekend of frustration trying to get this product to work with my iBook and thought I would share what I learned with someone who might be as clueless as me.
It worked right out of the box with the airport card but I noticed it was sluggish at best and sometimes wouldn't work at all. The main thing that fixed it was downloading the newest firmware for it from D-Link's website (plug in a cable to do it of course).
Also for some reason the manual tells you to pick your Ethernet connection to use. I have no idea why though. I found it much better to choose the Airport option. A friend also suggested I turn off the Ethernet and Modem options because when they are on things are slower because it is searching using all 3.
(I could be wrong about these things - but they worked for me).
The tech support guy I talked to didn't know anything about macs so that didn't help me. Since I downloaded the firmware things have been working great. The range is good and pages load almost as fast as when the cable modem is directly plugged in.
Good luck.

    Great speed....but..., October 28, 2002
By user (corona, ny United States)
I truly like the speed of the wireless connection, I compared it the Lynksys and saw a dramatic increase in speed using the dlink. I also like the 256 bit WEP. A couple of major issues I am very uncomfortable with is not being able to turn of the SSID without having major connectivity problems on the wireless side. The other issue is having to reboot the router every day to reset the wireless connection and be able to connect to the internet even when I can ping the router from my laptop.

The Setup Wizard makes it easier than ever, October 19, 2002

I actually didn't have to use the setup wizard to get this working. I had my PCs shut off, plugged everything in to the router, plugged in the router's power, booted everything up, rebooted my cable modem and I was connected to the Internet in about 5 minutes total. It was great. After that I used the setup wizard to setup the wireless portion and that didn't take long either. So far everything has been working great and I've had no problems.

WORST techinal support EVER, October 16, 2002

I was shocked to see so many good reviews. It is always wonderful to get a product that sets up and works flawlessly, but if you are in the unfortunate minority who, despite the simple setup and apparent ease of use, has some unknown glitch, be ready for some major frustrations and alot of wasted time. I am usually pretty good at solving computer problems. Everything worked initially and then suddenly kept losing signal . I literally spent HOURS waiting and talking to the worst customer support ever. At times I was correcting them. One solution they suggested many times was to unplug router each time this happened. They also twice told me they had to send my case to the special techs who NEVER once attempted to contact me. One tech's help ended up requiring me to go to Toshiba and I nearly had to restore my entire laptop. I returned the product and got a comparable Seimens and now I am among those whose experience was nothing but great. Comparing the two, when the D-Link did work, makes me all the happier I switched. In identical circumstances the Seimens is quicker and has a better range. Good luck to all you lucky ones--may you never have to call their suppodrt line!

good security features and good range of signal, October 15, 2002

With 256-bit WEP available and coupled with MAC filtering I feel very secure when I use this router. The MAC address filtering does seem to block LAN access as far as my tests have shown. I have two wireless NICs one in each laptop each with different MAC addresses. First both laptops were connected to the router and then I turned on MAC filtering and clicked apply. After the router restarted itself I went and checked to see which laptops were connected and they were both still connected. So I tried a bunch of other things to see why the router was letting the laptop connect and the only time MAC address filtering worked was when I rebooted the router with the reboot button. After that it seemed to not let the laptop I specified connect. So it seems as though the router will not boot a MAC address if it's already connected, and it needs to be rebooted not just restarted to actually block the MAC addresses it has in it's list.

The only thing is that the router seems to reset the time and date stamp everytime you reboot. It's a small thing, but it was annoying at first. So just don't set the time and date until you are done with everything and you wont need to reboot again.

Other than that everything else has been working as it should. There are little qwerks but I believe they will be fixed in the furture versions of the firmware.

I have recently had the pleasure of installing this wireless router at my home office and I'd have to say it was very easy. I have many clients who come in to my office area and most of the time they have a laptop with a wireless card. Being in the business I am in we are always exchanging files accessing the Internet and printing things out. Everyone that has come in here has been able to connect to my wireless network and transfer files, browse the web, and print out documents. There has been a wide range of different brand names and we have been able to get them all working eventually. It is one of those things you don't really think about until you need it and when it doesn't work it really cramps your progress. I am very happy with this router and would most definitely recommend this to others who need to get other wireless adapters connected quickly.

Has been running like a top since day 1., October 5, 2002

I had this installed for me by a friend of mine who knew more about computers and networking than I do and while he was here he taught me some stuff. He let me know how I'd need to reconnect to the Internet with this router if my ISP dropped my connection, or how to troubleshoot if I had a problem. What I am getting at is that I found this product to be pretty cut and dry as far as setting it up goes. It took him about 10 minutes to get my PCs connected to the Internet and I was learning what this thing actually does in the next 15 minutes.

I have found that it is fairly easy to understand, thanks to the documentation and simple menu items. I feel much more confident about administering this router when problems arise thanks to the documentation and my friends help. M

My wife is able to connect to the Internet using her laptop from anywhere in the house now. We are all enjoying the wireless freedom and the ease of use.

My favorite part is that I haven't had to actually fix anything because the router has never seemed to fail or lose a connection. Although I do feel confident enough to fix it if and when it happens.

I am always a good fan for D-Link, but not for this one.
You really have to wait to see what they can change in the next firmware release.
This 22MBps should be the best choice on the market, but you should KNOW THE FACTS before you decide to buy it. Especially if this is for your BUSINESS!

Many of you bought this wireless router for the MAC Address control capability and falsely thinking that your LAN will be safe from the intruders. Now think again!

For the WIRELESS part, this router only supports CONNECTION CONTROL to the internet, NOT the ASSOCIATION CONTROL which basically means although you stopped the unauthorized user from being able to access the INTERNET using wireless( your neighbor stealing your bandwidth ), BUT it will still allow connection to your INTERNAL LAN ( your neighbor poking your Microsoft network )!

Before a wireless client can access your LAN or WAN through your router/AP, it needs to be associated with your AP. Their older DI-713P has the ability to reject the Association based on the MAC Address Allow/Deny list. (Heck, even my other unstable Compaq CP-2W can do this!) Without this capability basically anyone can associate to your AP! Hence compromising your internal LAN's security.

Most mid-range wireless routers on the market will allow you to SEPERATELY control wireless portion and LAN portion of MAC addresses. This one combined them together. This is a bad thing! In most case, wired LAN is 99% safe from outsider. So putting all the computers on the MAC list will be a hassle, especially if you have VIRTUAL SERVERS which are not using DHCP. (You cant see them on the DI-614+ web interface, you have to either use ipconfig to figure the MAC out or check the MAC label on the card! )

As for the virtual server, you can only have a list of 10 settings which in some case is not enough. Other than these, this is a NICE router!

To me, the major problem is the false sense of security they advertised. From the reviews I can see ppl thinking that way without knowing the truth.

I believed their software engineers will be working on this soon. When thats been fixed, I will definitely buy it again!

Fairly easy to install, this one even has better encryption than the AirPort Base Station and I saved [alot of money] I had to buy an AirPort Card because D-link does carry cards compatible for MAC, but this was a blessing because the it installed inside my laptop above the PC card slot, leaving the PC card slot open. The install was even easier with my Dell Desktop, hooking it up to 1 of the 4 ethernet ports in the back of the DI-614+.

low price and lots of features, September 28, 2002
By user
I was mainly interested in this router because of the price to feature ratio compared to others. It has so many features and such a low price that I am amazed that it can be offered at this price. Lots of security features, 256 WEP, URL/IP/MAC filtering, SSID broadcast can be turned on or off, and a bunch of others.

The setup was rather painless and short, and I had my internet connection and wireless access up and running in about 20 minutes.

Great Product and Awesome Security, September 25, 2002
By user
I have Earthlink DSL via PPPOE with static IP and this router was super easy to setup. The web based manager provided me with a setup wizard which lead me through all the steps to get up and running on the Internet. The wireless portion of this router is almost just as easy to set up. I chose what channel I wanted to use, changed my SSID from default to whatever I wanted, enabled 256-bit WEP encryption, and set it up so only my wireless MAC addresses could access my LAN.

All of this was done within about 15 minutes, including physical install and configuration.

Plain and simple, I am very pleased with this product because of it's ease of setup and security features. (On a side note, make sure to upgrade to the latest firmware so you get the option to NOT broadcast your SSID to the world for even better security.)

One problem with PPPOE turned out to be with ISP, September 24, 2002
By user (los angeles, ca)
I am giving this product 5 stars because I have had absolutely no problems with it since I got it. Except on the initial setup trying to connect to my ISP via my DSL line since it is a PPPOE connection. I had some wrong information about my PPPOE settings from my ISP so everytime I tried to connect I would get errors. That was all fixed with a quick call to my earthlink customer support.

The wireless portion of this router was where I thought I'd have problems, but it turned out everything worked like it was supposed to right out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy and quickly I was able to get my laptop up and running on the internet. There are some advanced settings that deal with performance on the wireless end, but since everything is working fine, I have no desire to mess around and accidently break something.

essential parental controls and fast enough speeds, September 21, 2002
By user (Phoenix, AZ)
The feature I like most about this device, besides the wireless, is the parental controls that are available. I can control what websites my children's' computers wont see, and when they are allowed or not allowed to access the Internet. This is also helpful for keeping out unwanted users on the wireless portion of the network. The rated 22Mbps is perfectly fast enough for our family to play games online, share files, browse the Internet, share a printer, and everything else without waiting forever.

Setup was made extra simple because of the quick install guide and the setup wizard. Once you plug it in you are shown the setup wizard so you can start configuring your router properly. As soon as I had the settings correct I couldn't click the status button quicker than the other computers connected to the router and were ready to browse the Internet. Our other computers have D-Link 802.11b+ cards in them.

I am very satisfied with the speeds we get, the setup process, the parental controls and the price for all of these features fits well. Knowing your family's computers are safe and protected without having to punch holes in the walls or climb in the attic is a great feeling. This is well worth the purchase.

good product, but not as advertised, September 19, 2002
By user (Hayward, CA United States)
I'm using DI-614+ and DWL-650+. It's very easy to setup, but you need to install driver (without the card in your laptop) first. Otherwise, windows won't see the device. This is a step backward compare to other PC wireless card.
Speed is another thing that these products don't work the way they are supposed to work. I can get only up to 11 Mbps instead of 22 Mbps.

Sold my old AP and Router and now I am Pleased, September 18, 2002
By user
I sold my year old AP and router/firewall/switch and upgraded to this all in one router/firewall/switch/AP and faster 802.11b speeds than all other 802.11b APs. After selling my year old products on eBay they pretty much pay for my new upgrade. I was surprised to be able to get a reliable and speedy router for this low of a price. The amount of features that are on this compared to the AP and Router I bought a year ago are numerous amazingly easy to use. I am very impressed in the advancements D-Link has made in a year and am looking forward to another reliable networking year.

The speeds of this "Enhanced" 802.11b are double that of normal 802.11b, and I am unsure why anyone would want something slower.

The setup is also extremely simple. basically it's a plug in the wall, plug in the computers (or not if you are using all wireless) and run the Quick Start Wizard.

I am very impressed and pleased with my new purchase.

I am Enjoying my FAST Wireless Freedom, September 17, 2002
By user (Seattle, WA)
When this is coupled with the DWL-650+ card for the laptop the speeds are twice as fast as the conventional 802.11b @ 11Mbps and priced well under the 802.11a cards. I was amazed to find that this is even faster than cards rated at 11Mbps even when networked with 11Mbps access points or routers.

I am very excited to be browsing the internet free from all wires and at speeds that don't annoy me. I can even play games over our LAN and not get a bad ping. The setup was super simple and the configuration settings are adequate for what you need to do. I don't think they could have made this any better than it already is. This wireless card is definitely "top shelf" in my book and I'd recommend it to everyone.

serious problems getting unit to work with my xp system, September 15, 2002
By user
After four hours of working with the set up program, plugging and unplugging the cables attached to the router, the cable modem and my computer, and waiting on line to get to tech support (in one case a full half hour), I decided to return the system. I spoke with three individuals in D-link's technical assistance, all of whom tried to be helpful, but even after following their directions internet access was excruciatingly slow when the unit was in place. My system is a brand new computer with an xp operating system. It is possible the unit was defective, or so I was advised by the last person I spoke to at D-link. Others have been pleased with the router, but based on this experience and my efforts at installing their 520+ pci card, I give them a one star review.

Great deal but buggy., September 12, 2002
By user (Louisville, KY United States)
You gotta admit, the price is great! Easy setup etc.. Bla bla. But even after I flashed the firmware, it periodically drops the connection. I have to manually reboot it. But that's ok since I just use it at home. I'm hoping they will release another upgrade and get this damn thing to be smoother.

Quick install and works Great!, September 11, 2002
By user (New Jersey)
I installed this bad boy to get rid of my older router and separate hub. This allowed me to combine multiple units into one and get better speeds than I had before. I am impressed with the ease of installation. I thought this would take me at least a couple of hours, but it only took one. I had the DI-614+ up and running then installed my wireless network card (the DWL-520+) on one of our PCs and it was already connected to the Internet before I even changed the settings. Of course I went back and customized everything, but the default settings help with determining if the products work at all. All mine work great.

I get great signal strength from the other side of the house and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to start sharing their DSL or Cable connection quickly and painlessly.
