Very simple and easy to use, December 6, 2002
By user
I was glad to see that it wasn't very hard to set this up and start sharing our cable internet access securely. It practically worked great out of the box. I was lucky and the default settings were exactly what I needed to get onto the Internet. The wireless portion was just as easy to setup. I installed my DWL-650+ and instantly was connected to the 614+. Everything went very smooth and I was very pleased when everything was done.

VPN, Gaming, File Sharing, XP, 22Mbps, they all work!, December 4, 2002
By user (Oceanside, CA)
I have had minor hang-ups since I bought this router. I bought it to be able to handle my VPN connections, my kids' gaming habits, file sharing programs, and all on wired OR wireless. These have all been working great for me. It is hard to believe that others are having so much trouble. Everything I've thrown at this thing it can handle. My wireless connection is great, right now we only have one laptop that can take advantage of the wireless but when a buddy comes over, or when we get more laptops I will be ready. The 22Mbps only works with other D-Link products of course, but you can buy them in a bundle. I have a DWL-650+ in my laptop and it gets constant 6-7Mbps when I am on the same floor as the DI-614+. When I am upstairs I get about 3-4Mbps. This is perfect because our ISP only gives us 1.5Mbps speeds. Setting everything up was fairly simple since all the features are right there in this one box. We all run Windows XP and which only made setting this up even easier. From within the web based configuration I was able to open specific ports to allow certain PC games and file sharing programs to work properly. There are even preset firewall rules that allow you to play MSN Game Zone and more, all you have to do is enable them. Another plus is that I can set up "Parental Controls" to disallow certain websites from showing up on my kids' computers. I can do this by entering in keywords I find inappropriate into the parental control area. This router continues to work flawlessly to this day. Our family isn't exactly novices when it comes to utilizing a router for all its uses but we sure are taking advantage of what this router can do. I am very impressed and somewhat proud that I can get this one product to do so much for us and at such a low price. This is definitely a great value.

A big stinking joke of a product and tech support, December 4, 2002
By user
How's this for a brilliant product: You build a wireless router with a 4-port switch that can only accomodate 1 EMAIL USER because the built-in server can only accomodate 1 IP address per port! So if the other three wired users want to use your email software, you are sh** out of luck. And it took 3 phone calls to tech support to get the question answered. One of them said after 30 minutes of playing around with router settings "Maybe you should not have gotten this router." Statement of the year. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ROUTER AND STAY AWAY FROM ALL D-LINK PRODUCTS

Disappointed, December 4, 2002
By user (NC USA)
I bought the 614+ with the intent of using the Nortel Contivity VPN client to connect to my company's network. Tech support told me it doesn't work with Contivity, but does work with the Extranet client. I was unable to get either the Contivity or the Extranet client to work. If you don't need to use a VPN to me this would not be a bad product, but don't expect much help from Tech Support. I think they get most of there recommendations from Internet news groups.

Fast Wireless, VPN works, Easy to get Setup, Overall GREAT!, December 3, 2002
By user
I have been officially networked for about 2 months now and just everything has been running smoothly for me since. The few problems I had (wireless rebooting, and VPN issues) were all solved with firmware upgrades. I understand that with all the millions of combinations networks, computer hardware, and the internet has things change all the time and to keep products up to date with what is changing upgrades are required. I am OK with that and will gladly upgrade whenever I have trouble doing something, or when a new feature has been added. My wireless range is perfect; it covers everywhere in my home and very little outside my home. I still use other methods of security like MAC address filtering, 128-bit WEP, Static IPs, etc. I feel very secure with D-Link hardware. I get 22Mbps speeds almost everywhere in my home, and where I don't I can still get 11Mbps. Actual speeds have been topped at 8Mbps, and lowest have been about 1-2Mbps. My VPN was rather easy to get going as well (once I upgraded the firmware on the 614+ and wireless NICs). Setup was very easy, I followed the instructions and used the setup wizard, although I was on my own when it was time for VPN, I was still able to figure it all out with a call to a friend. I called support once and had to wait on hold for a long time before I got them, but once I got them on the line they suggested upgrading firmware, which is what fixed it all. Overall I believe I am now a D-Link customer until they do me wrong, and so far it's been a couple months and everything has worked out great.

Tech Suckport, December 3, 2002

I had some problems setting up the DI-614+ and the AirPlus DWL-650+ and made a call for some technical assistance to the forever holding Technical Support. I was on the phone with them for a half hour trying to get the router and the wireless card to talk. They then told me to go to the dell web site and download and update my bios. After all that, they didn't even stay on the phone with my while I updated the bios. They said this should fix the problem, and they would send me an email with some kind of instructions for something. I asked them why couldn't they stay on the phone with me while I updated the Bios, and they said because they don't know how long it's going to take. (It only took a couple of minutes) I updated the Bios and was not surprised that it did not fix the problem. After all that, I didn't even get that e-mail they said they were going to send. I called back, and was on hold for even longer. I finally was able to fix the problem myself. After I got it up and running, I found that my signal was disconnecting and re-connecting once in a while. I went to the web site to update the firmware, and haven't had a problem yet. Hopefully that will fix the problem of the disconnecting of the signal. I was very disappointed and frustrated with D-Link's support, they really need to have people work there that know what they are talking about and train them so that they know how to solve issues problems like they are suppose to.

Freedom At Last & A Great Price, December 1, 2002
By user
I have been using this card along with the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ Wireless 22 Mbps Broadband Router for about a month with absolutely no problems. I am running this in my IBM T22 with Windows 2000 with a cable modem. I use VPN to connect to my work with no firewall problems. Other systems I used gave me nothing but problems and I wound up returning them all. It is doing exactly what I expected. The besst connection range is about 50 feet in doors. Try to locate your router in the center of your house and on the same floor you work on. Going through too many floors and walls will kill your connection. However, don't be mislead, no wireless system will work as well as hardwired. I have tried the Linksys WPC11 Wireless Network PC Card (802.11b) with Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router (802.11b) it was terrible. I suggest you do not change the default setting. There is no reason to. Also, it is very important to read the install instruction FIRST. It make a big difference in the order you do things.

New 2.10 firmware fixes MAC filter, no 22 Mbps linux support, November 30, 2002
By user
New firmware corrects MAC address filtering problem, so now access is blocked to the LAN, not just the Internet. Was able to configure router to act as just a stand-alone access point, since I already have a firewall. (Use switch ports only, disable DHCP). I did not see a way to disable NAT, which most people would never care about anyway. One thing to watch out for, MAC filtering applies to both wireless and LAN connections. I enabled MAC filtering, only allowing one "fake" MAC address that I put in, and suddenly could no longer connect to the management console through the local LAN. Had to reset to factory defaults (hold reset 10 seconds), to get back into the box. Also, no Linux driver for the DWL-650+ card which is disappointing, so no 22 Mbps to Linux. I had to buy a Linksys WPC11 which worked fine with Linux and the Di-614+

A little work and great things can happen., November 29, 2002
By user (Philadelphia, PA United States)
Okay I got this thing set up in about 20 mins with no use of the manual at all. I installed two off the D-Link pci cards and away I went. Everything was fine. Then I read the D-Link had a firmware upgrade. I upgraded and OH MY GOSH!! I got almost 2x the speed I was getting before. I am getting about 7 mbps and the router is downstairs below my room. I Love this thing so far.

good luck, November 27, 2002

I bought this d-link 614+ last week and I am going to return back. This is just a nightmare to work on it. At my job I do alot of network troublshooting but this is a really a time consuming to make it to work on win XP Pro. 4 hrs attempt I was able to obtain dhcp ip address once and then I lost it when updated the firmware to ver.2.10. The only reason I updated because of thier Tech support suggested that if I update the firmware it will 100% resolve my issue next time. Well, It made it worse. After that I was not able to get the dhcp ip address from my ISP provider. Their own Tech support couldn't figure this out why its doing that. I tried on my three windows xp machines got the same result. Also their TEch support are not that great, they know few things and after that they tell you shut down the pc plus the router wait 5 min. if still on status configuration not showing ip address give us a call back.LOL, good luck another word he runs out of solution.

BAD VPN performance-very poor support, November 27, 2002
By user (NJ-USA)
I bought this router and is dropping VPN connection, this is very annoying. When I called D'Link, the support calls goes to some third party (not direct D-Link) I have to hold for more than 2 hrs to get coonected. The support guys does not have more than the config-guide knowledge. They refered the call to D-link special tech support. Never heard back from them. Returned the router to store. No option!

Awful tech support, VPN problems, November 25, 2002
By user (Seattle, WA United States)
Although this device worked out of the box with my laptop, it didn't take long to run into issues with other machines. The desktop machine I was trying to get it working with was running Win98 and wasn't getting an IP address from the router. After an hour or two on the phone with a somewhat rude tech-support person, he didn't know how to solve the problem and decided it was "a Microsoft issue" and gave me an 800 number for them.Eventually we decided just to reformat the machine and throw XP on, which was good for other reasons, and got the router working. At that point we learned that the router wasn't compatible with Novell VPN software, even though they claim they support it. After a 4 hour conference call with both Dlink and Novell (and the Novell guy knew more about the router than the Dlink guy) we still had no solution. The final solution: I went out and picked up a Netgear wireless router. Everything worked great, including VPN, on all boxes, in 10 minutes.

Awesome Speeds and Range!, November 23, 2002
By user (New Jersey)
I get probably around 5-6Mbps at best through out my home. In bad spots of the house I only get about 1-2Mbps, which is still good enough to surf the web just fine. There is a new press release by D-Link stating that these products will get free firmware upgrades to enhance the speeds to about 12Mbps real world. That's almost double what I get now! I am definately looking forward to this boost in speed and would recommend everyone to buy one of these now and some D-Link adapters because they will soon be even faster.

Range is exaggerated, slows connection, November 19, 2002
By user
Purchased with airplus card for speeds up to 22mbps, I am getting 0.6 mbps on the laptop with the card, and 1.2 mbps on the desktop unit. Doesn't work the way they say it does. Also, setup was difficult, had to download new drivers and firmware.

A Very Stable and Reliable Wireless Router at a Low Price, November 12, 2002
By user (the broiler room)
Lots of features and the 22Mbps speeds on this router is what initially drew me to it. And what do you know, high speeds and a wide range of features is exactly what it gives me. I am more than pleased with this wireless router. I was able to keep my existing 3 PC wired network and have plenty of room to expand my network wirelessly without having to run wires every where. The range on this router alone covers my entire home and then some. I get good to great signal whether I am upstairs or downstairs with the router being downstairs. The features are great because I can shut off my kids' access to the Internet after 10pm on school nights without having to manually unplug them or tell them anything. So even when I am away or out for the night my kids wont be staying up late or getting into any trouble on the Internet. Very useful. I also have this currently working with my XBox to allow game play over the Internet, which is very entertaining.

Fantastic router for my Apple/Mac computer!, November 7, 2002
By user (Florida)
I am not a technological genius, yet I set up this router, and installed an airport card in my iBook, both in under 30 minutes. This router has up to 256-bit encryption if used with a proprietary D-link card; Apple supports up to 128-bit encryption, which is what I use since I have the Apple airport card. I find 128-bit hex encryption quite satisfactory. I have this router between two walls, one foot off the floor, and it still gets excellent reception. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it and highly recommend it. I didn't need the manual to figure out how to set it up. Don't buy an expensive $$$ Airport base station from Apple; all you need is this router. It has every possible customizable configuration you could think of. Now I've got my G4 PowerMac with this wireless router enabling me to surf wirelessly on my iBook while sitting outside in my swing under the oak trees. Highly recommend!

Flawless since the latest firmware, October 30, 2002
By user
I first bought this about a week or 2 ago and the router seemed to reboot itself at random times which gave me about a minute or 2 of no connection and then it would reconnect. This was fairly annoying to say the least. Then it all changed for the better. I visited a message board to see if anyone else was having the same problem as mine and I did find some people that were in the same situation as myself. There was also an announcement about how the new firmware was out and how it fixed the rebooting issue. So I downloaded the new firmware from D-Link's web site and installed that. Now everything works great and I haven't had any new or existing problems come up. I am very pleased that they are able to fix some problems and add features just by letting you download a new version of the firmware. Impressive.
