The best router at a good price, November 24, 2007

What a great upgrade. I upgraded the software to wrt and it gives great range and strong features at a good price.

Hate this router, August 8, 2007
By user (New York)
My old Netgear router was a cinch to set up compared to this. I'm running XP on a 6-month old laptop -- maybe it'll work OK with Vista but I've tried to set it up 3 times this week with no luck. Conflicting instructions on the CD, Manual and web-site (that's 3 sets of instructions) make it worse. After installing, it caused a shut-down error (two times) that required a system restore to fix. The IP address may or may not have to be entered manually at which point it overrides the wired network IP address which then has to be "repaired" in order to connect again. The whole thing is a mess. I looked at Flashing the firmware but honestly, it's not quite as easy it the other posts make it sound. Newegg reviews show several people with the same problems and Buffalo offers virtually NO tech support.

Works great if you turn off 125 High Speed Mode, July 3, 2007
By user (SLC, UT United States)
I purchased this Buffalo router so that I could move my computer to a part of my house that has no cable outlet. When I first hooked it up, my bandwidth speed was disappointing. Using [...], I was pulling only 4800Mbps (using a direct ethernet connection I was getting 13500Mbps). So I started playing around with the settings, and after changing the FrameBursting mode from 125* High Speed to just regular FrameBursting, suddenly I was getting 13000Mbps. I tested it several times using both modes, and everytime regular FrameBursting mode produced 2-3x faster internet download speeds. BTW, this setting is found on the admin console under Advanced->Wireles Config->802.11g.

So far my connectivity has been great. No dropped connections. My only gripe about the router is that if you change anything in the admin console it takes 1-2 minutes for the router to restart.

Rock stable and trouble free., June 19, 2007

I got this router after suffering with Linksys for years. As far as wireless networking goes, this is the best decision I've made.

My old router was plagued with dropped connections, poor performance, and other glitches. With this router, I've never had to reset it even once. It's up 24x7.

I upgraded it to the DD-WRT Linux firmware last week. There are some pretty cool features including ssh access, VPN support, etc. It's been working great.

You may also want to try the "tomato" firmware which is supposed to be even better for network throughput.

Works great with Windows Vista, June 16, 2007
By user (Seattle, WA)
This wireless router was one of the easiest I have ever set up. It has excellent range and connectivity. Works perfectly with Vista. When you initially try to install the CD it may tell you that it's not compatible, but if you try running setup a couple of times it installs and runs just fine! A great value and superior to Linksys.

I've had this for a few months and haven't had a single problem. It's slim and attractive, and set up was quick and easy. Highly recommended.

This Router Rocks big time, May 14, 2007

I work in the internet and I'm a serious tech user but was a total newbie in WIFI (I know, shame on me xD ). After buying a new laptop I decided I had to have WIFI at home (since is where I do my work).

Really, I was about to go for a linksys... after researching a little over the net I went for this Buffalo and believe me: is the greatest choice I could make.

The only thing: You HAVE to flash it with DD-WRT (it took me about 10 minutes/12 tries). the DD-WRT menus are easy to navigate and understand and the router is working without a rest since I installed it (I'm online 24/7), no need to reset or anything. You don't need to be afraid about flashing it, in the DD-WRT website they tell you step-by-step how to do it and is VERY easy.

It has a pretty decent range, in my place it goes throug 3 o 4 walls with a decent signal and is very easy to set security setting (I encrypted my signal and established the mac adresses that could connect to my network, plus, is very easy to set new mac adresses).

Trust me, Buffalo is the way to go if you want to go wireless, no highway here ;)

Definitely would recommend this router, May 12, 2007
By user (Chico, CA USA)
I got this router when we moved and the only broadband web connection was through our cable. My old DSL modem/router combo wouldn't work, so I decided that I would finally get a router with wireless capability. Based on others' reviews of the Buffalo WHR-G54S I decided to go with it.

The price was definitely right. I could scarcely believe that it was as inexpensive as it was. The footprint of the unit is also right. It stands on end, making it take up only a little space on the desktop.

The only reason I wouldn't give this 5 stars is that it was a *little* difficult to configure. The CD-ROMs they provide with it help you set up the router and add a wireless connection manager to your laptop computer. The router setup got hung up on a seemingly crucial step, and it was only because I got fed up with the process and decided to "backdoor" it that I got it working. The wireless connection manager software took a few times to "remember" that I only ever used it for one wireless connection. After that, it works fine every time I start it up.

One issue that I don't know what to do about is that my cordless phones interfere with my wireless router. Every time my wife uses the cordless phone, my laptop's Internet connection drops and the wireless connection manager loses the router's signal. I've switched channels on the router to avoid this problem, but it hasn't corrected itself. Still, since the Buffalo broadcasts on the same channels as every other comparable wireless router, I assume other routers would also have the same problem.

In all, I would recommend this router. It's decently powerful (though I haven't tested its range limits), not terribly hard to configure, and has served its purpose well.

This router met every one of my specs. If you read the manual it says to use this code 09 f9 11 02 9d 74 e3 5b d8 41 56 c5 63 56 88 c0.

not as good as..., May 3, 2007

I bought this router a month ago and I think it not as good as people says because I lose connection several times, I have to turn it off and on again to get the connection working properly.

    Works well, April 24, 2007
By user (St. Louis, MO United States)
This integrated seamlessly into my old linksys router. Easy set up and good online documentation. It does not have as great a range as I expected. I am in an old 3 story house (plaster walls). It did not reach from the third floor to the first floor (as I hoped it would). Hard wired to the 2nd floor it has good range througout the house and through brick walls into the back yard. Zero disconnect issues after 2 months of use. (Old linksys with antenna booster sucked).

Rock-Solid Stability, Great Features, Easy Configuration and Port Forwarding Settings, April 21, 2007
By user (Iowa, USA)
I've had a lot of experience with wireless and wired routers over the past five years - I've owned Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, and Belkin routers and am the local "go to guy" whenever people have computer or network problems. When I decided to get this router to replace my AWFUL D-Link WBR-2310, I thought I would be taking a risk since I'd never heard much about Buffalo.

I was pleasantly surprised with this router, right from the moment I opened the box. The unit is sleek-looking, well-built, and has a well-engineered antenna... not one of the flimsy cheap 3 inch tall antennas most routers ship with... this one is about 8 inches tall and made of a solid material. The router has all of its basic setup information printed on a label on the bottom of the unit - the default IP address, MAC address, user name, default password, etc. Most other companies just include the router MAC address and nothing else. The attention to detail with things like the antenna type and the setup label demonstrate, in my opinion, that Buffalo is committed to making products that last and have the features people really want. Heck - because of that label, I didn't even have to use the manual to hook the unit up and get it working. Everything needed for setup is right there on the unit so you don't have to deal with finding the manual in a year or two if you need to clear the router's settings and set it up again from the default "factory-programmed" state.

Setup was a snap and took me about five minutes. I also set the router up to use the new WPA-PSK encryption technology for wireless security - WPA-PSK is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more secure than even 128-bit WEP encryption, so this is a wonderful feature for such an inexpensive router. Two other routers that I've owned have claimed that they supported WPA-PSK, but neither worked properly with it - the wireless would drop frequently with them, etc. This Buffalo router doesn't have any problems doing WPA-PSK and maintaining a stable wireless signal.

Setting up port-forwarding so that I can host multiplayer games online (Warcraft 3 in particular) and so I could connect to my home computers while I'm at work was also simple.

My suggestion - don't take a gamble buying another router. I've been burnt too many times when I've speculated that the "grass was greener" on the Netgear, D-Link, or Linksys side... This router is a known quantity. It works well and I HIGHLY recommend it for people of all experience levels with wireless networking technology.

Set-up is extremely easy! I bought this item to connect my Nintendo DS, Wii, Sony PSP and my laptop to the internet. Just plug it in and simply apply the security settings according to the instruction manual. So easy even my wife could have done it!

    I love it., April 2, 2007

I purchased this product based on other people's reviews to replace the NetGear wireless router that disconnected me every now and then, this Buffalo router has kept me connected ever since I got it 4 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier.

Works great, but live support may be a wait, April 1, 2007
By user (California)
Newbie to wireless. Bought this one because I wanted to keep it simple, and this one apparently does that well- better than some much higher-priced models. My brand new Vista notebook (Dell) works fine with this. Didn't add any alternate firmware either.

Have never had any problems getting onto or staying on my network in the two months I've had this. Also was able to easily pick up networks at various airports and to get online while visiting a condo community network that other laptops couldn't access.

Only reason I haven't given it a 5 is that it often takes a 30-minute plus wait to get to a human in their 24/7 tech support. I think Buffalo could improve this, but most reviews seem to indicate that you'll almost never need to contact them. They have been very patient and helpful both times I did work with them.

I just added AES encryption today with the help of tech support and will add comments later if I have any problems. Wish I'd thought to ask about adding intrusion protection, but it may be better to wait until Vista is more common to ask about that. Too many firewalls can be problematic.

I'd buy it again. Just call early AMs for best shot.

Requires constant power cycling to keep it up, March 28, 2007
By user
This router has been in operation for about 3 weeks. When it is functioning correctly, it is a pleasure to use. Unfortunately, it requires almost daily power cycling to keep it running - all the idiot lights show normal operation, but there's no wired or wireless connectivity until it's power cycled.

    I love Buffalo, March 28, 2007
By user (USA)
I've been using Buffalo networking products for about 5 years now. They've grown considerably since that time, but their products are still great. And their customer support is always friendly and helpful. I've even called for support on a product that was at least 2 years out of warranty and they happily helped me get my connection reset. I honestly don't know what the reviewer "TechRules" is talking about. I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Buffalo's tech support and I've NEVER been subjected to any "upselling". In fact, when I inquired about upgrading to improve the speed of my internal network, I was told I should wait, that the technology isn't yet worth the price to upgrade! Can't get much more honest than that.

My setup is fairly complex for a home network - I have one Buffalo router connected to my DSL modem and my desktop computer connects directly to that router. Then I have two Buffalo routers set up as WDS bridges - one in the bedroom and one in the TV room. The one in the bedroom connects my ReplayTV to the internet for guide updates. In the TV room I've got another ReplayTV, my XBOX, and an NSLU2 network storage with 2 drives, all connected to the Buffalo router/bridge there. I stream video from one ReplayTV to the other, and I also stream video and music from my network storage drives to my XBOX Media Center for viewing on the TV. It all works flawlessly.

My only complaint is that I used to be able to get a customer support person on the phone within 5 minutes. Now, since they've grown so much, it takes about 20-30 minutes on hold to get someone. They really should beef up their support staff, but other than that I have absolutely no complaints about Buffalo's products or their support. Highly Recommended!

Works great, plug and press!, March 27, 2007
By user (Oxford NC, USA)
I love this little router, as all I had to do was plug it into the the big internet "box" and press the button on the top, et voila! All our computers got on the internet all over the house. It also has a range of 230 meters (690 feet), almost the length of a football field, so I am going to try it in the studio outside. It may work all the way there, as well!

I was sorry to read about the rude tech support person the other reviewer had; when I called with a simple question, the person on the other end couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Great experience all around. I am using a Mac OS X laptop, which I also adore. Airport (installed in my laptop) finds this router listed as "dd-wrt" on the internet list. Since my laptop goes with me all over the world, I'll buy another router to take with me wherever I go. Voila!

My first time wireless. Great for XBox 360 live., March 26, 2007
By user (NY State)
I am no techie but this thing was a cinch to set up. I got it for my son to hook up to XBox live. The router is located on the first floor of my house and the XBox is located upstairs and about 30 feet away and it works fine. Good stuff!

    Great Router......Not expensive, March 22, 2007
By user (H-Town Texas)
If you are looking for a wireless router. This one is great. I did a lot of research and found this one to be the top rated in my price range. It is MUCH better than expected. Much better than the old Belkin I had.

The software was hard to follow. But, I found the support staff was great!. It took a good 15 minutes for them to answer.....but once they did they were very helpful. And they were out of Chicago, IL.

Thumbs up!
